Black Monday isn't usually for a couple of weeks, but it came early for a pair of NFL coaches -- on the heels of Todd Haley getting dumped by the Chiefs, the Dolphins have fired Tony Sparano on Monday, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms.

We noted Monday morning that there were reports Sparano would be let go at the end of the season. It appears that timeline was ramped up, and it's entirely possible that owner Stephen Ross didn't want to fall too far behind other teams in searching for a new head coach.

Sparano, speaking to the media on Monday morning, would not address his job security.

Week 14 Recap

"No, I want to coach against the Buffalo Bills this week," Sparano said. "I'm going to get ready to coach the Buffalo Bills. That’s my sole focus. Can’t wait to get my team back here and Wednesday and get ready to go."

According to Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network, secondary coach (and Assistant Head Coach) Todd Bowles will take over as interim head coach for the next three weeks in Miami.

And there's an additional twist to the Miami situation emerging, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that former Chiefs president Carl Peterson will take over the role of "czar" in the front office, which has been vacant since Bill Parcells departure from Miami. (Peterson has been/is business partners with Ross and is believed to be a link to hiring Bill Cowher in Miami.)

But Peterson tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that ESPN's report of him joining the Dolphins is "inaccurate."

I agree with canebadger.  But was it fair that last year they were looking at Harbaugh while Tony was still coaching.    Tony,  it is probably in your best interest not to be with this organization. The management speaks out of both sides of their mouths.  Good luck Tony -  There are a lot of Teams that will need you next year.   I enjoyed your enthusiasm very much.

He won't leave the booth for any vacancies in 2012.  He has said that all year.

hey pi22over7....what has your beloved Jets done lately?  oh, lost consecutive AFC championships!  thats like the Pats going 18-0 and losing in the Super Bowl!  Embarrasing, not finishing the job! I would rather not even make the playoffs!  and you think fatty Rex is a good coach?  loudmouth!  Just like your typical New Yorker! The Giants are the class of New York bud, atleast they dont pretend to be the best in the NFL, and prove everyone wrong every year!!

He needed to go, and Tampa Bay needs to fire Morris tonight.  Clean house with all three Florida head coaches.  Serious lack of coaching and motivation in the sunshine State.

Did fins have to fire Tony before end of season? He deserved to coach until the end of the year. It isn't his fault jake long got hurt and Nate garner couldn't block. It isn't his fault losman couldn't hit wide open recivers. I am not sure I like Ross. I hope he is not runing the show. If we get cower or fisher it doesn't mean anything. We need to find a qb and get acouple of breaks Fins have plenty of weapons that go under utilized. They were also snake bit in four close losses.
