Black Monday isn't usually for a couple of weeks, but it came early for a pair of NFL coaches -- on the heels of Todd Haley getting dumped by the Chiefs, the Dolphins have fired Tony Sparano on Monday, CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman confirms.

We noted Monday morning that there were reports Sparano would be let go at the end of the season. It appears that timeline was ramped up, and it's entirely possible that owner Stephen Ross didn't want to fall too far behind other teams in searching for a new head coach.

Sparano, speaking to the media on Monday morning, would not address his job security.

Week 14 Recap

"No, I want to coach against the Buffalo Bills this week," Sparano said. "I'm going to get ready to coach the Buffalo Bills. That’s my sole focus. Can’t wait to get my team back here and Wednesday and get ready to go."

According to Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network, secondary coach (and Assistant Head Coach) Todd Bowles will take over as interim head coach for the next three weeks in Miami.

And there's an additional twist to the Miami situation emerging, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that former Chiefs president Carl Peterson will take over the role of "czar" in the front office, which has been vacant since Bill Parcells departure from Miami. (Peterson has been/is business partners with Ross and is believed to be a link to hiring Bill Cowher in Miami.)

But Peterson tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that ESPN's report of him joining the Dolphins is "inaccurate."

2 Terrible hires to begin with........

thankfully for the chiefs, Weiss just got a job. I wish Cowher would come to KC, but it'll never happen.

Jobu...what are you talking about? Sparano was in his 4th season, not his first.

Sparano was great comic relief, hopefully the Dolphins will keep Ireland and continue their streak of woeful play. As a Jet's fan who lives in South Florida, I see every season begin with Dolphin propoganda (never a bad word on TV or sportsradio) all you hear about is what a great season they will have, only to have them bight the big one year in and year out. Their fans are finally fed up and I enjoy their frustration. I hope Ross makes another bone head move. Parcells dry Sanduskyed the Dolphins and even if they bring in someone good to coach, they still need to replace Ireland and they still lack many pieces to make any noise. Parcells left town like Butch Cassidy running to Bolivia. Saban knew enough to jump ship. Marino knew it was a trainwreck and chose to do TV instead, the string of failed front office people, coaches and QBs grows. This team stinks like the dumpster at Red Lobster on a hot day, but go ahead and get your hopes up Dolphans...yet again.

The Dolphins have been a shittty team since '82, zap1?! More than likely you've been a jackass since birth. 7 division titles since then, 13 playoff appearances. 253-209 record. Not exactly spectacular but pretty comparable to most "good" teams during that span.

Wow. You have a weak team and you don't even give this guy a full year to coach? Classy.

I think there's another Harbaugh bros. that they can hire, Is there? - just offer him 8million & he'll do the job for yah.
Head coaching job is a real bitch, cowboys should really reconsider hiring Sparano as their OC.

Mel Tucker interim coach in Jacksonville? Man of color. Is there a pattern here or has the NFL achieved it's goal? Just an observation.
