Big Ben doesn't practice, optimistic on playing

By Will Brinson

Ben Roethlisberger looked like a statue (or, if you prefer, "the best 49er") during Pittsburgh's 20-3 loss to San Francisco on Monday night but is optimistic that he'll play on Saturday against St. Louis.

The Steelers quarterback said on Wednesday that he wasn't negatively affected by remaining in the game and throwing 45 times, and that his ankle is no worse because of it. Roethlisberger did not practice on Wednesday, however.

As Clark Judge pointed out Monday, it was a bad decision to leave Ben in against San Francisco. But it doesn't look like the same mistake will be made against St. Louis this week, as the Steelers would reportedly be "shocked" if Roethlisberger played against the Rams.

"Steelers officials would be shocked if Ben plays this week," Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network tweeted Wednesday. "Fully expect him to rest at least one week. Mike Tomlin yet to reveal decision."

Tomlin's decision should be pretty obvious: sit Ben against the Rams.

The entire point of putting Roethlisberger on the field against the 49ers was to gamble on a shot for homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. If Pittsburgh beat San Francisco, they would've jumped into the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, with a very good shot at homefield advantage and a bye in the first week of the playoffs.

Instead, the Steelers now need to both win out and have the Ravens slip up against either Cleveland or Cincinnati. As we noted this morning, anything's possible with the Ravens on the road.

But the likely scenario for Tomlin's crew involves traveling for the first round of the playoffs (perhaps to Denver) and preparing for any other reality by playing Roethlisberger against the Rams just wouldn't be prudent, particularly given the way he looked on Monday night.

Big Ben doesn't practice, optimistic on playing

He's going to play got 2 reasons.
1===The opponant is St.Louis.If you look at every players stats, many of the had their vest games against the lambs.

2---He's Ben Rothlisberger, dubbed the toughest QB in the NFL
I look for the Steelers win big, but Big Ben may have to take his clothes off to count to 21.

If the Steelers Officials don't have the brass kahonies to dictate that decision.....well then they aren't "officials" are they?  Why not cite "team sources"....like the janitor or the people who was the jerseys?  If Tomlin runs him out on the field he should be canned...

Big Ben doesn't practice, optimistic on playing

Let's hope Ben can play so he can injure himself even more;maybe even cause the Steelers to lose the game to the Rams. Burress got two years for firing a loaded weapon into his own leg; Roethlisberger gets to walk scot-free for a sexual assault, evidently not his first, on a starry-eyed college girl. Sure am happy all the announcers do so love this guy!

Big Ben doesn't practice, optimistic on playing

Maybe the Steelers had a better chance to win with Charlie Batch at QB. With two weeks left, anything can happen. Maybe Ben should have sat the MNF game. The Ravens couldn't do anything in San Diego.

I think Pittsburg is lucky Ben made it through the whole game. He was getting Smith'd up and down the field all night. He could have hurt the ankle even worse - could have ended his season.

It was selfish for him to play. He made more mistakes to cost them the game than chances to help them win. Why not think about the fact they already are in the playoffs. He needs to be healthy. They took a big risk. Now Batch starts against St. Louis, a team with nothing to lose. Yikes.

Report: Steelers 'shocked' if Ben plays Week 16

Every time we hit midfiled, Arians ran the ball on first and second down and left us in a third down situation that we couldn't convert on most occassions.  Arians didn't pass enough in this game.
Pittsburgh threww 44 passes, the second most they've thrown all year, with 3 ints from a one-legged QB and you want them to throw more?

Report: Steelers 'shocked' if Ben plays Week 16

Why is it so hard to believe Ben started and finished that game?  Tomlin has the title of "coach" but the bottom line is Big Ben rules in Pittsburgh.  If Ben says he's ok to play, then he's ok to play.  If Ben doesn't want to come out of the game, then Ben won't come out of the game.  Ben will sit against the Rams if Ben wants to sit against the Rams.  Tomlin has absolutely ZERO say and he knows it.

Charlie don't surf !!

Report: Steelers 'shocked' if Ben plays Week 16

I thought Ben should have been pulled after Suisham missed the FG, or at the very latest, after the 49ers went up 20-3.  They could have gotten Ben out for the last 10 minutes or so.

What surprised me even more, though, was that the Steelers didn't run any packages for Dixon in this game.  They had all week to practice them without Ben, it arguably makes sense from a pure football standpoint in a big game against a stingy defense, and also would have limited Ben's snaps in the game.

I can see not feeling that Charlie would bring anything different than Ben (particularly from an evading the rush standpoint), but again, i think Dixon could have really provided a spark when needed and given Ben a little rest.
