Breaking news: Rex Ryan likes to talk about the Jets and how dangerous they are. On Monday, he made sure that the world knows, in advance of a Christmas Eve New York matchup, that while the Giants are an "excellent" team, "I think we're better."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin was asked about Ryan's comments during his Wednesday press conference, and his response was, well, what you'd expect out of Coughlin -- he thinks "talk is cheap."

"I just say, regardless of the talk, it will be decided at one o’clock Saturday afternoon," Coughlin said. "Regardless of what is said. Talk is cheap, play the game."

Coughlin appeared pretty exasperated at his presser, and it's hard to blame him. The Giants breathed new life into their season by taking down the Cowboys two weeks ago, and then turned right back around and tried to kill it off again with a devastating loss to Washington on Sunday.

This Saturday, they're in a full-on elimination match, as a loss would put them at 7-8. Even if the Cowboys lost out, the Eagles (who play Dallas on Saturday) would win the NFC East tiebreaker.

Coughlin knows that, and he's fully aware that engaging in a public war of words won't do his team any good, even though he might use Ryan's willingness to talk to his advantage.

"Perhaps," Coughlin said when asked if he'd used the Jets talk to motivate his team.

Huh?  CBS did you edit this article?
Redseat I initially shared in your confusion when I first read this part of the article because it does not sound like it made sense. I then went to ESPN.com (here is the link: ) for some clarity. ESPN.com referred to 'talk is cheap' as being Tom Coughlin's mantra and that is when things began to make sense. Hopefully Will Brinson will edit this to clarify it for CBS Sports.com readers.

As far as Rex Ryan goes his act has really began to wear thin here in New York and if the New York Jets fail to make the playoffs this year, the media will start to begin to paint Ryan into a corner and call 2012 his "make-or-break" season. They have already took a dismissive attitude towards his Super Bowl predicition earlier in the summer.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Rex and Rob Ryan have 2 things in common... They both suck and they they both have big and fat mouths to boot..
I do not understand how year after year the Jets are suppose to be so great and they flop all the time. I figure the Giants will kick there a $$.. Giants are a better overall team..
Jets are pretty much like the rest of the league this year. You have the Packers and the Patriots and the rest can lose to anybody.. Go figure... Very strange year for the NFL

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Both of these coach's are arrogant and self centered.  Post game press conferences should be interesting!  But I am pullng for the Jets to win this game for several reasons.  One it will help my helpless Eagles, Two I can't stand Eli Manning & lastly and really can't stand Coughlin!

Go Jets!

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Coughlin: Coach that's gotten it done.

Ryan: Loudmouth coach that hasn't gotten it done.

It's that simple.

Secondsout, go away. We do not need "fans" like you. Go watch the NBA. I agree with you about Rex and his mouth but Sanchez? Really? He never says anything but the right things and he tries his best. Be angry at the media, they hype him, he is not a self hyper like many other players out there. Incase you did not know this but there are teams in the league that STILL have not won a superbowl, they are not easy to come by. Second if you know the history again it was the media that made Joe do his guarantee. They were pressing him about being such a big underdog and how he had no chance he gave them the verbal bird with a "I guarantee we are going to win this game"
In closing I have to agree with you about Fireboy Ed also. I have season tickets and he is just painfull to watch. I loved it a few years ago when we were playing New Orleans he started that cheer by standing on a bar and was "escorted" out. LOL  He may of been a fan at one time but now he is just a fool that the NFL uses to market the product.

Rex can't help not opening his mouth. Look at his belly.

Hope the G-Men put a smashing on them like the Jets got last week.

As far as Ryan goes...he really does need to shut his mouth because he usually doesn't back it up. I do like the fact that he makes himself look like a fool everytime he opens his mouth but it is getting a little annoyed.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

I've been a Jets fan since Joe Willie. I am tired of Ryan's talk, it IS cheap, I'm tired of Fireman Ed, I'm tired of the Sanchise,(1st round pick?. Please!), and I'm tired of all the other BS (foot fetishes, etc.) that has occurred since Ryan got there. They have all made Jets fans look like fools. I was at last week's game. We left with 5 minutes remaining in the first half. I knew the game was over with the Eagles first score. They will not win the Super Bowl again in my lifetime, period. Joe used it all up with his guarantee in '69. The only team in NFL history to never have had their own stadium, already won their only Super Bowl 42 years ago. They've teased us many times along the way, (thanks Mark Gastineau in '83) but now it's gone being teasing. J - E - T - S...Just End The Season!!!!!!!!
