Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Breaking news: Rex Ryan likes to talk about the Jets and how dangerous they are. On Monday, he made sure that the world knows, in advance of a Christmas Eve New York matchup, that while the Giants are an "excellent" team, "I think we're better."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin was asked about Ryan's comments during his Wednesday press conference, and his response was, well, what you'd expect out of Coughlin -- he thinks "talk is cheap."

"I just say, regardless of the talk, it will be decided at one o’clock Saturday afternoon," Coughlin said. "Regardless of what is said. Talk is cheap, play the game."

Coughlin appeared pretty exasperated at his presser, and it's hard to blame him. The Giants breathed new life into their season by taking down the Cowboys two weeks ago, and then turned right back around and tried to kill it off again with a devastating loss to Washington on Sunday.

This Saturday, they're in a full-on elimination match, as a loss would put them at 7-8. Even if the Cowboys lost out, the Eagles (who play Dallas on Saturday) would win the NFC East tiebreaker.

Coughlin knows that, and he's fully aware that engaging in a public war of words won't do his team any good, even though he might use Ryan's willingness to talk to his advantage.

"Perhaps," Coughlin said when asked if he'd used the Jets talk to motivate his team.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Every year the Jets who were a pathetic organization for most of their history have had a winning record.
I don;t know dude, I don't think we can attribute any organizational turn around to Rexy. The Jets went from perennial doormats to pretty good tream
under Parcells like 12 years ago. Since then Herm Edwards got them to the playoffs 3 of 5 years he coached there and the Mangenious had them in the playoffs until he was sabatoged by the supremely selfish Bert Farrrreve. And neither of those guys had the benefit of a free-wheeling ownership signing free agents like its going out of style. They've been one playter away for the past three years. Suckers.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Not that I truly care that much about either team at least I have respect for Coughlin.  He is legit where as Rex you have no idea what the truth is from his trough mouth.

I think the Giants are a 500 team at best but what have the J-E-T-S done?  Tell me how good they are again and who they have beaten!

The J-E-T-S play with no integrity and always show it on the field.  Always showboating like their coach and putting it in the face of the opposing fans when they score a TD.  CLASSLESS!!!  Who is the WR for the JETS that alwasy does this???  Hmmmm....

also, if coughlin's claim is that talk is cheap, perhaps he should purchase a muzzle for the loud mouths on his team like Rolle (who guarantees a win every game and is typically one of the worst players on the field), Jacobs (loud mouth overrated running back who was last seen taunting the saints when they were up by about 20 something points, yet we never heard boo about that), Tuck (half man, half a season), and all of the rest of the hyped up terrible players on the giants' squad.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Coughlin said "talk is cheap, play the game"???......does that mean Coughlin is going to have HIS players fake injuries when the going gets tough on his horrid secondary??? although he did say" play the game" not" play the game with INTEGRITY".

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Hey I agree he changed the attitude for a short period of time but his act gets to be ridiculous, just like you mentioned.  His players will tire of this.  They have been winning over the past years since he has coached but the talent seems to be diminishing with no backup.  All changes quickly in the fad world.

Blow hearts like Rex typically don't last because players get sick of them over time.  It seems to me his time is coming.  I thought the Jets had the perfect opportunity the past two years and they blew it - they won nothing.

I'm sure you will responding saying that they will meet the Pats in the playoffs this year and go to the Conference game and then win the Super Bowl - I guess we will see.  If they do it will be the most arrogant bunch of blow hards spewing Jet idiocy - but that is fiction.

Better luck next year Jet losers!!!!!!

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

You guys are all ridiculous: "OHHHH Rex Ryan = No Super Bowls."  Good one guys, he's been a head coach for two + years with a QB who should just be graduating college.  Every year the Jets who were a pathetic organization for most of their history have had a winning record.  He already has more playoff wins than any coach in Jets history.  He's been 32-20 as the Jets head coach when he inherited a team of garbage from Mangini.  Do any of you ever think it's strategy???  Instead of talking about the Jets garbage performance last week, everyone is babbling about the Rex hype machine over this game.  Anyone remember the game against NE last year?  All the talk going into the game was about what foot comments Wes Welker was making and the difference between the Patriot way and the Jets way.  Games they've been silent for (Pitt in the AFCCG, Indy in the AFCCG, Philly this year, NE at Metlife this year, etc.)  they played like crap.  Rex's goal is to win football games and he's been better at it in his young career than almost any young coach could hope to be.  At the same time, he changed the entire attitude of the NYJ franchise.  Instead of being a loser, they're actually on the map with high expectations of at least playoff, they're selling more tickets, they're becoming more marketable, and most importantly- they've been winning more than in the past.  So all of you can shove it with "he hasn't won anything" as if new coaches in the league are expected to win the whole thing in two years.  Separate his words from his coaching resume because his words are there just to help win games, nothing more.  He's a darn good coach and his team has won some big games for him.

Coughlin on Rex: 'Talk is cheap, play the game'

Even if Rex Ryan wins the next 5 Super Bowls, he will STILL be a pompous, overbearing bag of hot air with absolutely no class.
It's beyond ridiculous to think he's spewing all this drivel to 'inspire' his team. These are supposedly professional athletes on the Jets roster. If I was one? I'd be emarrassed, if not disgusted.
Yeah, Rex...take the credit/blame for how your team fares.
So what does that say of you in your teams lambasting, taken out to the woodshed, drubbing and absolute dismantling by the Eagles last Sunday? As one of your own players mentioned, it was kind of Philly to take their foot off the gas near the end of the game, or it would have been a Sixty-something debacle.
Your team is 8-6 and you have only beat 2 teams .500 or better.... AND have yet to win SQUAT in your tenure as head coach.
Go crawl back into the cesspool that spawned your pathetic self. Your blow-hard quotes aren't even entertaining anymore.
And as bad as Norv has sucked as the Charger coach? I'd take ten Turners before I'd ever want your sorry ass coaching the Bolts.
Keep your pie-hole flapping while everyone else just shakes their head in amazement.
