Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

Posted on: December 21, 2011 6:57 pm

There's plenty of trash talk leading up to Saturday's game between the two NY-area teams. (US PRESSWIRE/Getty Images)

By Ryan Wilson

Prior to the Jaguars-Jets Week 2 matchup, then-Jacksonville wide receiver Jason Hill insinuated that Darrelle Revis was overhyped. (Revis' response: "I don’t even know who that dude is." Hill was inactive for the game and the Jags released him on November 30.)

Presumably, Revis knows Victor Cruz. The Jets and the Giants meet Sunday and Cruz, ignoring the advice of his head coach, had some pointed thoughts on the man generally considered the NFL's best cornerback.

"Teams aren’t really scared (of him) anymore. He’s had to earn his money this year," Cruz said according to the CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Lisa Zimmerman. "Teams aren’t really backing down. I feel like we’re going to do the same thing. We’re going to go out. Until he physically stops us we’re going to throw the ball on him."

For good measure, Cruz's teammate Hakeem Nicks said Revis was "decent" before later calling him "great."

When apprised of Cruz's comments, Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said simply "It's just Jets-Giants week. If that's where they want to go with the football, they're welcome to."

Not to be outdone, Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, coming off one of the worst games of his career, spoke frankly about the Giants' secondary and cornerback Corey Webster in particular.

"I can't wait to see him Saturday," Holmes said via the New York Post. "I hope he's ready to bring his 'A' game." When asked if he agreed with the assessment that Webster is having a good season, Holmes replied: "I could care less. … They depend on their front four to get in and get pressure on the quarterback. A smart-enough defender knows he has a few seconds in his play clock that the ball should be released and, if not, he's depending on his guys to take care of business. I think those guys just fall victim to that a lot of times."

Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was asked about Holmes' observations but wasn't willing to partake in the gum-flapping, instead offering an “I don’t think so." (So we know at least one person heard Coughlin's "Talk is cheap" remarks.)

Thankfully, Antrel Rolle has refrained from laying down odds on this game.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

To Big D sports, I did not notice the fantasy part,  as for the game its a big deal in NY , CBS throws a few articles up because NY is a big market, but its not like both teams are 5 win teams.  They both have sucked this year, but somehow both still control there own destiny.  I hope for your sake Green scores 3 times and, and the Jets and your team both win this week.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

Football fans care about a game where the winner is very likely to make the playoffs.  Its not a Monday Night game where the whole country  is gatherg around, but whenever the Giants and Jets play it is interesting, and throw in the fact  a playoff spot is looming I think it is an interesting game for football fans. I didnt notice the fantasy portion of your post, and Id imagine you are in the finals if you are playing the second to last week, so im sure some money is on the line. I wish you good luck, I hope both guys score, the Jets win and we will both be happy.  I do not have illusions that the whole country is dying to watch two teams that have honestly been miserable to watch all year, but despite there poor play somehow the Jets are still in control of there own destiny and that says something.  One last side note, I never understand why recievers talk about Revis before a game. It almost never happens, but it does seem to motivate him. Victor Cruz probably wont be matched up with Revis as much as Hicks, who has praised Revis all week.  Cruz had a breakout year, but should keep his mouth shut because in the end Revis with a chip on his shoulder has proven to be even more difficult to deal with then the regualar Revis.  Guys like Cruz who have one good year under there  belt figure maybe they can make a name for themselves. No downside, if Revis doesnt cover him much or does and shuts him down, he will say , "wow Revis is really good" if he beats him deep once and the Giants win he can over due the significance of it.  Im very comfortable with Revis being on my side in this battle.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

Teams that can't seem to win the big game tend to do a lot of trash talking.  If you look at winning clubs at the moment.. the packers, the patriots, saints, etc... these teams are very discipline teams and you hardly see trash talking with them.  Yhe teams that like to do alot of trash talking.. the eagles, the lions, chargers (Rivers is an idiot), jets (cromartie), etc.. all feel like they need to psyche each other other before they play the game as if that would give them some type of advantage over the other team.  Great teams do their trash talking by beating the crap out of the opposition in the game and all trash talking is left in the game.

revis is the best cb in the league, however i agree with cruz to a point no one seems to go at him if their line gets no pressure on qb any corner is beatable including the island. looking forward to see if the giants have the _____ to go at him or not. as far as the war of words its fun how can it really affect game against rivals.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

this is the problem with both the Jets and the Giants , they write checks their bodies can't cash. Rex Ryan and his "#1 defense", Rolle saying the Giants can beat the Redskins 99 times out of 100. Now you have some second year Wr talking trash. Someone needs to remind the Giants they have the 30th ranked defense and are in the middle of another December melt-down. Someone needs to remind Rex Ryan that the Jets will never  be the top football team in the NJ/NY until he gets a Super Bowl ring as head coach of the New York Jets. He says that he wasn't brought here to kiss the rings of Belichick. He could start by kissing his feet.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

Prima donna wide receiver. One of the many "rules" in sports that good coaches teach, and that good players take to heart is that you have to be able to respect your opponent, if you aspire to win over him. Revis isn't the best CB of all time, but any half-wit WR knows he's among the best, if not the best overall CB playing today. If he wants to beat Revis, he'll shut up, prepare very hard, and study a ton of film. Maybe AFTER the game, and if AFTER he's burned Revis for 6 catches, 160 yds and 1-2 TDs, can he then start bragging. Because right now, Cruz just looks like a punk.

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

First of all WHO THE HELL IS VICTOR CRUZ?????????? Some 1 hit wonder who is having a pretty good year?? Yep!
The only reason the GOON is saying that is because he is not good enough for Revis to stick!!
We all know Revis is going to stick Nicks, I also have no doubt that Nick will be lucky to get 50- 70 Yds at BEST!!!!
AC will stick Cruz and I guessing he has another DUD game like last week. Eli is going to get picked off early and often
I going to say at least 2 INTS and Under 210 Yds for the whole game MAYBE he throws 1 TD but it wont be to Nicks or Cruz!!
Mybe Ballard or Bradshaw. I cant wait to watch Plax kill their Weak DBS in the Red Zone!! Holmes will have 100Yd game and Im going to say Keller will be the star of the game with 2 TDS!!! J E T S JETS JETS JETS!!!!!!!! Who the hell is V Cruz??????????????????????

Cruz on Revis: Teams aren't scared of him anymore

lindro, if you read the post I say no one outside NY would care if it were not for fantasy football.  I do care because I was dumb enough to waste 2 picks on Hakeem Nicks and Shonne Green.  Hopefully Nicks can hold on to the wide open TD pass this week.
