On Thursday afternoon, Matt Barkley could give quarterback-needy teams at the top of the 2012 NFL Draft an early Christmas present. Or maybe he'll come sliding back down Lane Kiffin's chimney. Er, whatever -- he's announcing whether he'll return to USC or enter the NFL Draft on  Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.

2012 NFL Draft

"USC junior QB Matt Barkley will hold a press conference this afternoon to announce his decision regarding next season," the Trojans announced from their official Twitter account.

Barkley is the second-best quarterback prospect on Rob Rang's Big Board, behind only Andrew Luck, and in the latest NFL Draft Scout mock drafts, both Rang and Dane Brugler have Barkley going to Washington at No. 7 overall. (Brugler has Robert Griffin, III, going ahead of Barkley to Cleveland.) As our Eye on College Football colleague Tom Fornelli points out, RG3 is reportedly chatting with agents and looks like a good bet to enter the draft.

The Redskins, along with the Colts, Browns and Dolphins all qualify as top-10 teams (currently) who have a serious need at quarterback or might have serious interest in acquiring one of the top-three signal callers in the draft.

Barkley's USC teammate and blind-side protector Matt Kalil also recently announced he would enter the NFL Draft and that surely has to play a part in the decision that the Trojan quarterback will make.

Matt Barkley to announce draft decision Thursday

@ Laddin

My Q stems from the fact that teams saw the mocks, teams saw the projections, and still went on a batcrap crazy spree of drafting QB's earlier than many had projected them to go.

It's that simple. I'm not even basing anything off their performances or projections, I'm simply basing my Q on the fact that many QB's were taken earlier than their " expert " projections, which is why I asked, if Barkley leaves, and deepens the QB class for this yr (but he's staying so I guess it's moot), do we see the same reactions from teams we saw last year, which is taking a QB prospect higher than what most project him to go. It's as simple as that. Anyone who reads into my Q more than that is an idiot.

It's proven, last year teams reached early for QB's, so my Q, does it happen again ? That's ALL. But of course since Laddin's got that " S " I bet he probably thinks his opinions are just so on point!

Hey, I got an " S " too, and I'll never think my opinions are on point, I just happen to have one just like everyone else in the free world!

Matt Leinart will have that memory at South Bend for the rest of life.  He will be talked about by kids who are not even born.  There is no way to replicate that experience.  Jake Locker became a better quarterback in the extra year he spent in the Sarkisian system.  Remember, he had just recently converted to a drop-back passer from a run first passer.
Does any of that matter in the long run?  Yeah, Leinart will have a memory, but lost out on JaMarcus Russell type money.  If anything, Leinart returning showed everyone exactly where his intentions were.  To party and continue his celebrity lifestyle in southern California.  Locker became a better QB?  Are you saying that McDaniels couldn't have done the same thing for him?  That extra year pushed that #1 pick money out of his pocket.  Considering the changes in draft pick salary, he lost out on, probably, $20 million guaranteed.  Is a memory worth that?

CPPAUL...you either have a serious hard-on for Andrew Luck or you simply despise USC.  You need to lighten up.  Barkley has been pretty damn good in his 3 years.  He played Luck even in their meeting this season...forcing Luck to go 3 ot's to beat him.  Luck may be the next big QB coming to the NFL, but Barkley will be better than you are making him out to be.  Whether he has 5-star receivers or not, he gets the ball where it should be...and I think that's what most teams want from a QB.

Well said Heel fan. I think that Luck not winning the Heisman should be a sign that he may not be as good as they expect him to be in the NFL. It doesnt seem that he handled the hype as well as they think he should have.

Wow your post was a disgrace to intelligence. Barkley isnt Luck you are correct but he is not far behind. Luck is older and has had a little more time to mature as a QB. Luck could end up being a bust too and there is no way to tell. People said Ryan Leaf was better than Manning and said Manning had better recievers to throw to. Nothing is a sure thing when it comes to the draft. There is never a sure bet draft. Also when you look at it the best player ever could get drafted and if it is to the wrong team they will not have a good career if they have one at all. There are many other players other than SC QB's that were highly touted and ended up being busts like A Smith and J Harrington from Oregon, Where is Tim Couch?, I think he should come back and make a run for a championship and more. He has done the little things and never once has complained like Luck. Barkley has everything to gain next year by staying.
I have to disagree with points 1,3 & 4. 1)Who cares about those stats because there have been QB's bigger and faster than others that were busts. 2) advantage Luck except now hell have to learn a new system and im pretty sure he wont be calling his own plays for a while. There arent many other than Payton that do. 3) Luck make some better throws but is average at others. He throws the outs and 15 yard flags really good but struggles with other passes. 4) The talent that Barkley has is because he made them good not the other way around. Dont forget these guys are young. You have two red shirt FR TE's, FR WR's SO WR and these are just your starters or main players. Are they talented yes but would they be as good without a very good QB? Not a chance. They wouldnt have done what they did with most if not all the other QB's in the Pac 12 except Luck and maybe zona's qb and Wash's QB. As for the leadership are you kidding me? Barkley started as a Freshman the first to ever do that in the history of SC. He has been a captian since. He also has kept a program that has been banned for two years relevant and help bring them back to SC standars. Leadership better you need to go hhome and take a nap cause your head is messed up. Are you saying they will look down on him for showing emotion cause im pretty sure that i have seen Brady, Brees, both Mannings, Cutler and Rivers all who are considered the cream of the crop at QB. Its part of the game and when Tyler fumbled it was at a crucial point in a HUGE game there arent many QB's who would have kept their cool in that situation.
The biggest difference with the two of them that i saw this year having seen 5 Stanford games and every SC game is the fact that Barkley doesnt go missing in the Big games. The game against Oregon he showed up, ND he showed up, Stanford he outplayed Luck and that is a fact. The one game that i dont think he played his best was against ASU but at the same time the D was horrible and you had fumbles and dropped passes. Luck had more games of mediocre performances this year. If he was head and shoulders above Barkley and was as good as you say he would be known as Heisman winner and future number one overall pick Andrew Luck. He didnt even make 1st team all american and barely got second team over Barkley. C'mon now you have to give him a ton more credit. While i dont expect him to be a Manning or Moreno which no prospect should be compared to I do think hell be one of the better Qbs to come out of SC and if he goes to the right team will be one of the better QB's.

I do not see a team who is drafting #5,6,7 or 8 givng up a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year to swap 1st round position. Get off the glue this isn't fantasy football. Maybe a team in the late teen or early 20's maight do that but no way 5th thru 8.

Some good points but why the sour grapes if he stays ? Does it matter if he's going to just be an average QB at best like Sanchez,Palmer, Johnson, Booty as you suggest, unless you are his financial adviser or just an Anit-USC guy ?
Bingo.  Andrew Luck does have the makings of a solid QB at the next level and better than Barkely for sure just don't understand why he would be making a mistake for staying if he's going to ba an AVG QB anyway and money doesn't matter to this kid (Family is very well off) Guessing you are a bitter UCLA or Oregon fan just a hunch.
