By Will Brinson

At the beginning of December, the idea that Norv Turner could survive into next season as Chargers head coach was borderline laughable. San Diego was 4-7, dead in the water for the playoffs and Turner was as good as gone. Over the last three weeks, though, things have changed -- and it appears Norv can save his gig.

In fact, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the jobs of Turner and GM A.J. Smith "hinge on results in the final two weeks."

Latest NFL News, Notes

Put simply, it sounds like the Chargers winning out -- they play at Detroit on Christmas Eve and then at Oakland on New Year's Day -- will save the jobs of Turner and Smith.

After the Chargers victory over the Ravens in Week 14 it appeared as if the tides were starting to turn in Norv's favor; Philip Rivers said "it would be crazy" to dump the coach and Acee reported that just getting to the Raiders game with a shot at the playoffs would "speak volumes" to team president Dean Spanos.

Spanos now believes, according to Acee's report on Friday, that the support provided to the team and Norv by the fans and players, respectively, indicate that things aren't that far away from being on the right track.

If the Chargers make the playoffs, Smith and Turner are likely safe. If they miss the playoffs, at least a 1-1 or 2-0 record is probably necessary to save their jobs, although it's worth noting that the two also appear joined at the hip moving forward.

"If Smith is retained, no one should think he will need a new head coach," Acee wrote Friday. "Sources inside and outside Chargers Park say Smith believes in Turner now as much as he did when he went out on a limb and hired him in 2007."

So the Chargers will play out the string and then Spanos will make a decision as to whether or not Smith remains; that decision will obviously affect whether or not Turner returns as well.

But if the Bolts can manage to close out the season 2-0, that decision could suddenly be a lot easier for Spanos, and easier on Turner and Smith.

Well Norv and AJ, looks like the unemployment line for you both.  Thank GOD!!!  Bring in Gruden, Fisher, Cowher, etc...... and let them have the reigns.

HWP314, the Chargers do NOT have the "best talent in the league". There's a shortage at DL, LB, and CB.  We have not pass rush. We're playing musical chairs at LB, and the other CB spot opposite Jammer has been a problem this season (see Jets game). We also have problems on the OL w/McNeill having chronic neck problems the past few seasons. Aside from all those problems, I guess we're the most talented team in the league.

Hate to say it, but if Norv wins out, I'd be willing to give him another shot and see what he can do with a healthy team (which the Bolts have NOT been the past 2 seasons). AJ needs to do a better job with the draft, but I would not throw him out either. He's average at best now, but definitely not the worst.

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

No matter what happens in the last two weeks, Norv Turner has taken the best talent in the league and led them nowhere.  I used to be a Charger fan, but like when I boycotted my beloved Rams during the ray Malvasi days, I have boycotted the Chargers.  Get your fans back SD, and fire this moronic coach and give yourselves a chance to win again!!!

Are you kidding me?  Everyone talks about how much talent the Chargers have, but year after year, they seem to just throw it all away.  How does Turner escape responsibility?  Well one thing is for sure, Turner has already lost the first to be fired conest for this season.

Dump those two clowns (AJ Smith and Norv Turner) and get some real personnel in the front office.  If Fisher landed in San Diego, there would be trouble.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo............

.....
<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;">Charger fans are tired of "almost there" and underachieving teams.  This by far has been the SLOWEST starting team of all the Norv teams. Time for a change and time for the GM to go too. Depth has been a problem and we got lucky with FA pickups like Barnes and Gaither. Those were made possible by a loaded Ravens team letting go 2 talents.   Norv and AJ need to go.

all i can say is that being a chargers fan is frustrating as hell.....other teams get people like jim harbaughand we get garbage like turner.....i guess i may as well get used to 8-8 or 7-9 seasons as long as the clueless spanos family owns the team.....i guess maybe archie and eli manning were right after all.
