At the beginning of December, the idea that Norv Turner could survive into next season as Chargers head coach was borderline laughable. San Diego was 4-7, dead in the water for the playoffs and Turner was as good as gone. Over the last three weeks, though, things have changed -- and it appears Norv can save his gig.

In fact, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the jobs of Turner and GM A.J. Smith "hinge on results in the final two weeks."

Latest NFL News, Notes

Put simply, it sounds like the Chargers winning out -- they play at Detroit on Christmas Eve and then at Oakland on New Year's Day -- will save the jobs of Turner and Smith.

After the Chargers victory over the Ravens in Week 14 it appeared as if the tides were starting to turn in Norv's favor; Philip Rivers said "it would be crazy" to dump the coach and Acee reported that just getting to the Raiders game with a shot at the playoffs would "speak volumes" to team president Dean Spanos.

Spanos now believes, according to Acee's report on Friday, that the support provided to the team and Norv by the fans and players, respectively, indicate that things aren't that far away from being on the right track.

If the Chargers make the playoffs, Smith and Turner are likely safe. If they miss the playoffs, at least a 1-1 or 2-0 record is probably necessary to save their jobs, although it's worth noting that the two also appear joined at the hip moving forward.

"If Smith is retained, no one should think he will need a new head coach," Acee wrote Friday. "Sources inside and outside Chargers Park say Smith believes in Turner now as much as he did when he went out on a limb and hired him in 2007."

So the Chargers will play out the string and then Spanos will make a decision as to whether or not Smith remains; that decision will obviously affect whether or not Turner returns as well.

But if the Bolts can manage to close out the season 2-0, that decision could suddenly be a lot easier for Spanos, and easier on Turner and Smith.

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

Turner has more lives than a cat. After singlehandedly killing the Skins and Raiders, ne has taken a 14-2 Chargers team that Marty left and turned them into NOTHING. I can;t believe he is still around.

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

Marty Schottenheimer never led the team to the AFC championship or even won a playoff game.  However, Norv Turner has taken the team he molded and made it worse each year with the last two (including this year) not even making the playoffs.  A. J. Smith cannot coexist with the kind of coach the team needs (rumor has it he would like to hire Wade Phillips if Norv is fired) so he should go too.  Mike Shanahan has always won when he had a quarterback . . . just saying.

Only a conference championship or the Superbowl can save their behinds IMHO. Although a 5-0 to finish off the season is all swell and may even get the Chargers to the Big Dance as either a div champs or 6th seed wildcard, Bolts big daddy Dean Spanos should make it clear - no championship trophy and yer out of SD - just to keep their chestnuts roasting this holiday season. Go Bolts!

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

Norv Turner shouldn't have ever gotten hired in the first place. Hes worse then Marty S was and has held SD back for the last 5 years. Andy Reid, should go try and Save SD and norv should do what he does best, just be an OFF Cord. Hes not consistent enough with gameplans and worse, hes terrible with game management and hes a COWARD

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

Norv Turner seems to be a lucky guy.  His career record is 106-112-1.  No coach in NFL history has ever coached that many games with a losing record. Quite the achievement.

Wow!  If Norval survives the off-season and stays on as the Chargers head-coach, every sportswriter should start calling him "The Cat".  How many lives has he lived and does he have left as a head-coach in the NFL???  He must have something going for him because he keeps on being hired by some other team after he gets canned!  Is New Jersey, er, New York (either franchise) his next destination if San Diego cashes the chips???  He must bring something to a team because he is not unemployed too long when he is let go...

Report: Norv, Smith's jobs depend on last 2 weeks

He took over a team that regularly made the playoffs.

Please clarify.  San Diego made the playoffs two of the three seasons prior to Norv, and none at all the eight seasons prior.  They also lost the first game of the playoffs both times.  Norv coached them to three more straight playoff appearances, two of the three years winning at least one playoff game as well.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your belief that Norv should be fired, but exaggerating or fabricating only weakens your argument.

Please fire Norv Turner.  I'm not even a Chargers fan, and I feel for that team.

His playcalling is elementary and ridiculous.  He took over a team that regularly made the playoffs.  He now leads them to depressing, slow season-starts, and absolutely necessary strong finishes.  Make it end.  SD should OWN that Division.

Philip Rivers deserves better than the clown leading that group.

Good bye Norv.  Don't let the door hit you where the Lord split you.

They will only fire Norv Turner if he makes it to the AFC championship game. Only then will they fire him. Just like Marty.
