Trainers look at AP after he suffered a horrible leg injury Sunday (AP)

By Will Brinson

UPDATE, via the AP: Peterson is scheduled for an MRI late Saturday after taking a direct hit to his left knee in Saturday's 33-26 win over the Washington Redskins. Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson had a sprained knee and would be evaluated after the team returned to Minnesota.

Peterson said he knew "it was something bad" the moment he was hit and that he was in "severe pain" on he lay on the field. He was hurt on a tackle by Redskins safety DeJon Gomes on a 3-yard gain on the first offensive play of the second half.

On the next play, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder was hurt when sacked by Adam Carriker and London Fletcher. Frazier said Ponder had "concussion-like symptoms" and will be reevaluated in the coming days.

-------

On the Vikings first drive of the third quarter, the worst possible thing for Minnesota happened, as Adrian Peterson suffered an absolutely brutal leg injury -- there is zero chance he'll return for the game against Washington.

As our Redskins Rapid Reporter John Keim points out, Peterson was carted off from the field and has actually already been ruled out.

Peterson took a handoff on first and 10 and cut back to the left side of the field. When Redskins rookie safety DeJon Gomes tackled him, Peterson's left leg caved in and he fell to the ground in obvious pain.

After trainers looked at the running back's leg, he was carted off from the field.

Things didn't get much better for the Vikings after that, as rookie quarterback Christian Ponder suffered a concussion -- he's out for the remainder of the game as well.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

You can root for your team, sure, but never ever do I want someone hurt. This is horrible for our game we love. I am a Chiefs fan and hate Raider and Charger fan with a passion, but I wish nothing bad on them. Would you like it if we all wanted you to get hurt and fired because that is what you want. Peterson's injury shortens his too short career and that sucks. He is pure excitement out there and now he may never come back. Just horrible and sad. You need a life

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

The Vikings are doomed...  and as a Packer fan I couldn't enjoy that thought more.

They wanted Favre.  So they got him and surrounded him with a bunch of over-paid veteran talent to make a title run.  Then they are one FG from the Super Bowl and Favre reverts to Favre and that dream ended with a NO int.  Now two years later, the veterans are old and breaking down.  Their cap space is non-existant.  And appartently their best player is going to be out next year (at least).  And now they are out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes too.  LOL  Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Seriously, I never want to see a player get injured.  Buit it is what it is.  The Vikings are going to be bad for a loooooong time.  It took Detroit 12 to make the playoffs again and I could see that happening with the Vikings.  The sad fact is that if you happen to be a Viking fan you've got to know that your team most probably hasn't even bottomed out yet.

Get used to losing because their is a lot of that in the Vikings future.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

Haha he will be lucky to play at all next season, there is no way he'll be back at the start. And likely he will not be able to perform well until maybe mid-way through the next season, if that fast. It takes QBs about 2 years to get back to their levels for this type of injury, RBs need to be able to do a lot more so it could be even longer. But the shelf life for RBs are so short that 3 years from now he will be pretty much finished anyway. There have been a lot of great RBs that get injured and then never get to play again. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson are extremely recent examples of dominant RBs that just got pretty much kicked out of the league after injury. Guys like LT2 are still around but they don't do much. Portis disappeared quickly too. Once you're injured the NFL just discards you.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

First post here guys. I too, hope he is back next year. It looked like a cheap shot as Gomes seemed to dive at his knee, not tackle a leg (thigh) or at his body. My concern is not whether we get Luck or???? It is that we need a lot and the front office has not demonstrated an ability to judge talent. Their original draft by committee failed badly. The past two years weren't much better. Going after has beens for big bucks in the free agancy market rarely is much help (look at the Eagles this year). We need someone with some talent  for jdging talent.  I was not a fan of Ted Thompson when he showed up at GB yet he held firm, built through the draft and look what GB has now, a great, young talented team. We have gone done for a number of years. Even our loss to N.O. would have been difficult to recover from, if we had won, as we were banged up badly, had few backups, and probably would have lost #5. It would be nice to see Mr. Wilf, who has spent a ton of $$on this team, get something in return. He deserves, the people of Minny do and so do the players. Draft well, do well. I am not sold on Ponder, either way. We need line, receiver,  and db help in a big way. Go Vikes!

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

According to the TV postgame news on Fox, they were saying the Vikings are saying it may be an ACL and they're hoping he can play at the beginning of next season, although they still have no information if it's an ACL tear.

For the commenter saying it looked similar to "McFadden's injury a couple weeks ago": McFadden's injury is a LisFranc injury around his ankle and he's been out for half the season.  May I recommend: "Your Memory: How It Works and How to Improve It" by Kenneth Higbee.

They would not have drafted Luck they would have traded that pick for 2 or3 other picks or players.Which they needed badly

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

That's a shame. Adrian Peterson plays hard and he was having a good game before the injury. I hope the MRI is negative and at worst it's a tear. I'll be adding him to my prayers tonight.

Adrian Peterson suffers gruesome leg injury

If it's one of the 16 regular season games, it's meaningful.  Do you think they play for draft picks?
