Jerome Simpson's TD jump: Play of the year?

Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson's gained notoriety for some, ahem, less than smart things, legally speaking.

But on Sunday against Arizona, Simpson nearly broke the internet with a ridiculous touchdown leap, jumping over linebacker Daryl Washington.

OK, jumping is actually an insult -- Simpson scored on a leap that would net him a gold in about six Olympic events, jumping 50 feet* in the air and 100 yards* horizontally before landing on his feet in the end zone.

You can peep video of the jump over at NFL.com and as you'll be able to tell from the GIF below (via Timothy Burke), it is absolutely worth your using your mouse.

And here's a GIF of the jump, via Timothy Burke:

Big Katz, could NOT agree more with you.  It was obviously NOT "showboating" because the defender was right there drawing a bead on him and would have leveled him short of the goal line without the leap.

Good thing the BCS doesn't judge TDs or this one would have been ranked behind all things SEC. Even while Simpson was airborne the announcers were talking about Tebow.

Definately not POTY calibur for that reason.  Show me a great play that wasn't just mostly showboating.

topofstack,

Are you kidding me? Now a guy jumping into the endzone over a tackler is showboating? How do you know that Cardinal wouldn't have broken him in half or forced a fumble if he hadn't jumped him. If he leans in headfirst that play comes out very different, and if you have watched the Bengals in the redzone who knows what happens if he gets stopped on the one yard line. If I had a guess it would go like this. First down- Ced for no gain, second down- Dalton to green for a TD... wait there's a flag! Holding on the offense, third down- Dalton incomplete to Gresham, fourth down-- Nugent for three.

That was without a doubt the play of the year  in the NFL so far.

A great show of athleticism, but it really didn't change the result of the play.  He was going to break the plane anyway.

Definately not POTY calibur for that reason.  Show me a great play that wasn't just mostly showboating.

What really surprises me about this play is that they did not talk about Tebow right after he scored.
