With one week (and two games left in Week 16) to go before the playoffs begin, the playoff picture tightened up this week, eliminating a number of teams. But there’s still hope for plenty of other fan bases. Make sure to check out the fully interactive playoff picture here.
Here’s what was accomplished today:
-New England clinches a first-round bye.
-Philadelphia, Arizona, Kansas City, San Diego and Seattle are now eliminated.
-Cincinnati moves into the AFC No. 6 spot, previously occupied by the Jets.
-Detroit has clinched a playoff berth.
Some other notes:
-The AFC West is now down to Denver and Oakland. Denver currently has the tiebreaker, but the Raiders could still get in as a wild card if they don't win the division.
-Aside from Oakland, it's Cincinnati, the Jets and Tennessee vying for the last AFC wild card spot that's up for grabs. The other wild card spot will go to Baltimore or Pittsburgh, whichever team doesn't end up winning the AFC North.
-Atlanta can still catch New Orleans for the NFC South division title. If Atlanta manages to steal the division from New Orleans, the Saints are guaranteed to be the other NFC wild card team. The Falcons are also still alive for the remaining NFC wild card berth if they can't win their division (they're in the running with Dallas and Chicago).
-The Cowboys loss ties them with the Giants at the top of the NFC East, with the Giants winning the tiebreaker based on head to head (1-0). HOWEVER... their Week 17 game is against each other, in New Jersey. Not only will that determine the NFC East champion, but it will eliminate the other team, which will finish at 8-8 and which will not get in as an NFC wild card.
