Peterson

By Josh Katzowitz

Earlier Saturday evening, we told you about the report that Vikings running back Adrian Peterson tore his ACL today. That breaking news, unfortunately for the Vikings, was accurate, and it, in fact, might be even worse.

The team announced Saturday night that an MRI confirmed that Peterson had torn his ACL and that coach Leslie Frazier would discuss the matter at his Monday afternoon news conference. ESPN 1500’s Tom Pelissero also reported that Peterson tore his MCL but did not tear his PCL.

This confirmation, of course, was what Peterson was afraid of after Redskins safety DeJon Gomes blasted him from the side and bent his knee in an unnatural direction.

"It was very severe, the pain was," Peterson said after the Minnesota win. "Once it kind of eased up, I was able to kind of roll around and kind of grasp what just took place."

More from Pelissero:
Surgery may not occur for several weeks, depending on the extent of additional ligament and/or cartilage damage.

An optimistic timetable would have Peterson returning to action no sooner than September. And recent research suggests even an athlete of Peterson's caliber may struggle to return to his previous performance level.

It is, to say the least, a terrible piece of news for Peterson and the organization.

MRI reveals Adrian Peterson tore his ACL

Jeez...Merry Christmas...lots of hate in Packerland I guess.  If it can happen to a beast like AP, it can happen to any player...even Aaron Rodgers.  Then poof! The Packers turn into the Colts.

Get well soon ADP!

The Vikings are doomed - Let's review

The Vikings are doomed...  and as a Packer fan I couldn't enjoy that thought more.

They wanted Favre.  So they got him and surrounded him with a bunch of over-paid veteran talent to make a title run.  Then they are one FG from the Super Bowl and Favre reverts to Favre and that dream ended with a NO int.  Now two years later, the veterans are old and breaking down.  Their cap space is non-existant.  And appartently their best player is going to be out next year (at least).  And now, because they won yesterday, they are out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes too.  LOL  Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Seriously, I never want to see a player get injured.  Buit it is what it is.  The Vikings are going to be bad for a loooooong time.  It took Detroit 12 to make the playoffs again and I could see that happening with the Vikings.  The sad fact is that if you happen to be a Viking fan you've got to know that your team most probably hasn't even bottomed out yet.  This could get real ugly in 2012.  Indianapolis ugly.

Get used to losing because their is a lot of that in the Vikings future.

Hope he can make it back and run at 100%.  He has a history of injuries. After his frosh year at Oak he had shoulder surgery, had a high ankle sprain his soph year and broke his collar bone his junior year. Prone to injuries but a great back when healthy.

MRI reveals Adrian Peterson tore his ACL

As a Vikings fan and a Peterson fan I'm very sad to hear that he sustained this injury.  The good news is that with the advancements in treating this injury more and more players are able to come back from an ACL tear and perform well - this simply wasn't the case 10 years ago.  I wish AP all the best and hopefully we can see him return to the top of the running back hierarchy next season.

MRI reveals Adrian Peterson tore his ACL

this could have happened in the pre season or the playoffs 2 years ago its the risk every player takes when he steps on the field. To say he should not have been in the game is just stupid. His ankle was fine last week when he played the saints and had nothing to do with this injury, the defender just hit him low from the side of the knee. I wish AP a speedy rehab and return he is a great player and thats why he was on the field yesterday trying to help his team win.

Vikes fans, hold tight.  Brady came back from a similar injury, so did McGahee.  AP is all class.  He recently gave an interview saying he felt the pressure to play well for his fans.  Maybe he came back to quick.  Sincere guy.  He will be back, its not over

MRI reveals Adrian Peterson tore his ACL

I understand what you are saying Einar1961 but at this point in the season you are either 12-2 and playing for this season or 2-12 and playing for next season. The fact is they weren't 12-2 like you said and in the "hunt" so there is nothing to play for(in my mind). As a player I know you have to play for incentives and what not. As a fan I had already said weeks ago after he hurt his ankle that I had hoped they would sit AP down because I didn't want him to get hurt and risk not playing next year. Of course this is just my opinion and I am only 1 fan. It was just hard to watch yesterday because he is not only a great player but he is a great person. Injuries are part of the game but when it's a player like AP then it goes a lot further than hurting just the sport.

MRI reveals Adrian Peterson tore his ACL

It's a sad day for the NFL and for AP. Even an elite player with a great work ethic cannot come back to the way he was before yesterday. As a lifelong Vikings fan it hurts to know that I have seen the best of Adrian. A true warrior and the best rb I have seen this side of Walter Payton. A lot like Walter as a player and a person. A true gentleman and from what I have heard here in Minnesota has always had extra time to sign an autograph or chat with a fan. The NFL and the youth in sports needs more AP's in the world. On a day when the Diva's of the sports world(NBA players) start their season, I pray that AP can come back from this injury and pursue his NFL dream because he deserves it.
