Braylon Edwards, signed by the 49ers to a one-year deal before the season, has been released. He made the announcement on his website.

"I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense. I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans."

Edwards was originally the Browns' 2005 first-round draft pick before he was traded to the Jets during the 2009 season, where he became one of Mark Sanchez's favorite targets. Despite his willingness to take less money to stay in New York, the Jets instead signed Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason, and Edwards inked a one-year, $3.5 million contract with San Francisco in early August.

He appeared in nine games this year (five starts), and had 15 receptions for 181 yards and no touchdowns. His best season came in 2007 with the Browns, when he hauled in 80 passes for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns.'s Michael David Smith points out that if any team wants Edwards for Week 17 or the playoffs, all it requires is a waiver claim. But based on the statement published on his website, Edwards sounds like he's shutting it down until the 2012 season.

For now, the 49ers are comfortable moving forward with Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Kyle Williams and Ted Ginn and as their primary pass-catchers (which is what they were before Edwards was let go.)

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

You better hope that number 11 done beat number 12 in the playoffs because you will look a little foolish with the statement you just made. Number 11 is doing just fine thanks. Especially with less than one season under his belt with this O. How many years has number 12 been running his O?

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

With Edwards being released today and the possiblity of Delanie Walker out for the season with that jaw injury, it's probably wise for San Francisco to contact some WRs that's not currently under contract.  Terrell Owens, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, or even Randy Moss (highly unlikely).  Either than or start activating players from the practice squad.  It's bad enough Alex Smith lacks consistency, especially in the Red Zone.  Alex Smith and the offensive unit must score touchdowns and not field goals if they expect to go deep into the playoffs.

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

The Jets should have kept Braylon, He and Sanchez were on the same page MOST of the Time LoL!
I would take him back as a Jet, He would have been better then Mason in the Fist place.

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

Doesn't matter who is "catching" balls in SF, the problem is the QB. Alex Smith can't complete a pass beyond 10 yards. Until they get a QB who has the accuracy and arm strength to throw the deep ball, it doesn't matter who their WRs are.

Get a real QB in there and Crabtree & Davis become all-pros over night. Gore would also get some room to run and not have first contact at the line of scrimmage every touch.

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

He obviously wasn't going to be able to contribute in the playoffs.  It was a shot in the dark picking him up, he could've helped a little in the red zone.  It didn't work.  3.5 mil one year; could've been worse.

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

Braylon is at best a #3 WR in the NFL. This guy has been dropping balls since his UofM days, not to mention a thug, underachiever and Prima Donna. SF you are way better off with this guy not in your locker room.

49ers release WR Braylon Edwards

It's about time. They should have got rid of this turkey around Thanksgiving. The 49ers are going to have to do some instant roster changes. They need to honestly assess whether Delanie Walker will be able to return, if Walker can't return then they will most likely bring up Conrad Reuland TE 6-5 260 from the practice squad. The only two names that stand out in my mind to replace Edwards at WR are Dominic Zeigler 6-2 215 cut earlier this year from the 49ers or Terrell Owens
