Titans coach Mike Munchak's done good work in Tennessee during his first season -- his team still has a longshot of snagging a Wild Card -- and it hasn't gone unnoticed, as Munchak is reportedly on the top of the search committee list for Penn State.

Nearly two months ago, Joe Paterno was fired as head coach of the Nittany Lions and according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Munchak is the "top pick of the search committee" to replace Joe Pa.

Tom Clements, the Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach, is reportedly the backup plan in the event Munchak declines to take the job with Penn State. Clements, a Notre Dame grad, has interviewed twice already, although not yet in person.

Penn State's said they're taking a "measured approach" to the search, but has said that the school wants a new coach in place before Penn State's bowl game. Given that Munchak's final regular-season game with the Titans is January 1 and the Nittany Lions play in the TicketCity Bowl on January 2, that seems like a stretch.

Munchak, drafted in the first round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, was an offensive lineman for Penn State from 1978-1981 and was a second-team All-American in his senior year.

"Mike would be a great fit," former Penn State running back Curt Warner said per the Post-Gazette. "He's a Penn State guy. I don't think any of his old teammates would be upset about him getting the job at all. He has my support. I'd love to see him get it."

But Munchak told Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean that he's not interested in the gig.

"Nothing is going on," Munchak said, "People like to speculate."

The question will probably come down to where Munchak's loyalty lies the most: he played with the Oilers his entire career and has coached in the organization (either with the Titans or Oilers) ever since. That's since 1983, mind you, and it's probably enough time to cancel out his four years spent in State College.

Report: Mike Munchak tops Penn State search list

Another day; another rejection for Penn State. You got to love it that PSU has a Notre Dame grad as its backup plan, though the dude never interviewed in person. Clements has reportedly told his secretary to screen all his calls and just tell the Penn State people that he's not in his office and can't be reached. It's looking more and more that the hack Tom Bradley will get the gig by default. The only sticking point is he'll be tied up in court for several months this spring testifying in old Jerr's trial on what he knew or didn't know. Will the next guy who really wants this job please raise your hand. Going once; going twice; sold to the only fool that wants this dead end job. Congrats interim coach Bradley. Now go win 3 games next season my man.

Either Munchak is stonewalling (an entirely acceptable thing to do at this point) or the "search committee" to replace Joe Pa is mega-mega-stupid and quote possibly, willfully screwing up this process for some ulterior motives.
In any event, it is looking like the next head coach (or maybe several next head coaches) of Penn State will be tangled up with mind numbing levels of "oversight"  - committees will rule - and policy analysis will control every critical decision.

Penn State still has that holier than thou attitude and clinging to the concept that every coach in the country would want their job.  In reality, the reverse is decent coach would touch the job and wont until the idiot administration rids themselves of every person who knew about the Sandusky / Paterno coverup.  This includes any and all personnel involved with the institution.

Clement was seriously looking at the Pitt job but he ran out of luck when they hired Chryst. Munchak is in the pros and doing okay for a first year coach...why leave that for the cess pool at Happy Valley.

I can't imagine why a guy with an NFL head gig, with a successful start, historically patient/supportive owners, and a 28-year history with his team would make that change.  Especially since you'd be coming in on the heels of an extremely ugly scandal and trying to fill the shoes of a mega-legendary coach that's been there as long as anyone can remember.

If I were Munchak, I doubt I'd give that any serious consideration at all.

Don't do it Mike!!!  We, and I think I speak for Titans fans, like what you are doing in TN !!! I'd love to see more emotion on the sideline, but when we finish 9-7 or 8-8, thats gonna be alot better than all the "EXPERTS" said we do. Our future is very bright in Titan country!! Locker is gonna take us to the next level, Matt has done a great job this year and Jake is gonna be even better with a role model like him. Get our team ready for week 17, let's make the playoffs!!!  Good Luck in whatever you choose to do!!  GO TITANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
