Report: Tebow Broncos starter in 2012 regardless

Denver and Kansas City square off on Sunday with plenty at stake: the Broncos want to win the AFC West, and the Chiefs want to give Kyle Orton redemption for being benched and released by Denver earlier this year. Reportedly not at stake, though? Tim Tebow's job as a starter.

That's according to's Jeff Darlington, who reports that Tebow is locked as the starter for Denver in 2012, regardless of whether or not the Broncos make the playoffs.

"Sources have indicated, regardless of the outcome Sunday, the Broncos plan to move forward with the mindset that Tebow will remain the team's starter in 2012," Darlington wrote Friday.

Darlington's also got a juicy nugget about the relationship between Orton and Tebow. The Broncos quarterbacks have a fine system that keeps each other accountable (this is common among NFL position players) and the group began fining Tebow when fans bought billboards demanding that Orton be benched and Tebow get starts.

Though this ultimately happened, it pretty clearly created a rift and explains why the Broncos let Orton go. (Darlington also reports that allowing Tebow to have "better control of the locker room" was a deciding factor in Orton's release.) But if letting Orton go ultimately costs the Broncos a shot at the playoffs, it's simply an indefensible decision.

A totally defensible one is keeping Tebow ingrained as the starter. There are many reasons for this. He's under contract in 2012. He won games. He could progress as a passer. There won't be a franchise quarterback available when the Broncos draft next April. Using picks to trade up grab a quarterback ignores other needs. The Broncos are still technically "rebuilding," and drafting defensive players would serve them better. Tim Tebow is an absolute cash cow for the team. Giving him a vote of confidence now only decreases the scrutiny on the situation leading into the final parts of this season.

The list could go on for a while. Which is why it makes a lot of sense for the Broncos to have already arrived at the decision that Tim Tebow's their starter in 2012. Even if their 2011 starter manages to knock them out of the playoff hunt.

Report: Tebow Broncos starter in 2012 regardless

I would take exception to the redemption factor for the Chiefs.  Matt Cassel is going to be the 2012 starter.  Orton will be in a worse position than he was in as a backup to Tebow.  His inspiration (Orton's) will be the trade value he can show in his last game, possibly with the Chiefs forever.  Coach Fox is as clever as one to place Tebow in the 2012 plan.  But, I agree, there is a whole team that is gelling in Denver.  The O-line is playing in Tebow's favor and abilities.  When he completes a pass it is usually a good gain.  The Denver D is playing as a unit and that has helped win as much as anything for the Broncos.

Spooky guy really provides a good example of the football-ignorant, based on emotion tebow fan. I have yet to see an intelligent, logical post qualifying tebow as a solid qb. Tebow fans cannot defend their hero with any logic but instead must rely on childish emotion and calling out his critics as haters. The closest thing to a point they actually make is that tebow has led a few comeback victories. But to claim that the qb position is solely responsible for wins and losses is beyond moronic, as is believing that tebow was primarily responsible for Denver's six game winning streak. Defense and bad teams helped make that winning streak, if you disagree with me then how about providing some evidence for your opinion, instead of the usual response roughly equivalent to "nuh uh".

Holy crap Manteldemaris are you for real??? John Elway was the first pick in the draft who had a cannon for an arm, everyone knew it. HE DIDN'T SURPRISE ANYONE, HE FULFILLED THEIR EXPECTATIONS!!! Dude you need a brain with an upgraded memory if you think the same things were said about Elway that are being said about Tebow......

I guess if you can't find anyone better you have to start him. This Tebow thing is rally quite crazy. If you don't think he's a good quarterback it means you hate god. I live in the Washington area and we haven't had a good quarterback since Theisman. Every year was going to be the next good QB, were still waiting. If the Broncos really think Tebow is the next Elway, more power to them.

So...your argument is that passing percentage is what makes a good NFL quarterback...never mind then...won't waste my time arguing with you (if the Steelers had given up on Bradshaw early in his career he wouldn't have won any Super Bowls...umm..the same goes for Namath - both had horrible passing %.)  There are things called intangibles.  Tebow has them.  You are blind or have never seen a true football player if you don't recognize them.
Yes.  It's important for QB's to be able to consistently complete passes.  I wish I was blind during the first three quarters plus of most of these games so I didn't have to watch Tim flounder and get very few first downs and points.  He throws a bunch of passes in the dirt and a mile over open player's heads and it's not acceptable.  I've seen the comebacks.  I acknowlege the great drives that capped a lot of these games, but people, like you, fail to acknowledge the extreme offensive ineptness during major portions of these games.

Tim has done enough to be on the Broncos roster next year and receive consideration to be the starter.  What I take objection to is your original point, that this great news for "Denver Fans".  Tim has yet to lead the Broncos to a victory over a good football team.  It's not all on Tebow, as the rest of the team needs to grow too, but the QB is the most important position in the game.  The Broncos should look for the best QB option available to them including choices from the draft and free agency.  Tim is already on the list, but there's a lot of QB talent in this year's draft and the Broncos should strongly consider drafting one even if it's a Brandon Wheedon, Case Keenum, or Kellen Moore in the later rounds.

d2douce, or it that douche!  That is the stupidist crap I have read in a long time...never mind, I just noticed your Red Sux logo.  Without his play in the 4th quarter of many games, the Broncos wouldn't be in a position to make the playoffs, period!  Prater has been clutch but if you know anything about football you know the QB dictates the won/loss column.

Report: Tebow Broncos starter in 2012 regardless a Broncos fan, im not sold on Tebow long-term, but this team turned around when he took over as the starting QB...
The Broncos turned around at about the same time Tebow took over as starter, not "when". Correlation is not causation. There are a number of factors that contributed to Denver's turnaround. And yes, when Fox overhauled the offense to suit Tebow's skillset, Tebow was one of them. But he was hardly the biggest. Starters returning from injury and a defense finally getting the new, 4-3 defense down was a major factor, as was Willis McGahee's contributions (which started before Tebow took over, BTW).

This in no way diminishes the contributions Tebow actually made, however. He was a big reason why the running game kept getting better, and his wild, unpredictable style won two games for his team almost single-handedly. Kudos to the kid, but let's not get heavy-handed with the credit. Energizing the fanbase, helping his team win, making (relatively) few major mistakes, helping the run game, and two surprisingly effective passing performances is credit enough.

Was there any doubt?

Who else are they going to use? Tebow is the only qb under contract for next year. And I would rather have him than some other castoff. The Broncos aren't going to get a high enough draft pick to get a qb who could come in and start right away so, of course he's the presumed starter in 2012.

Report: Tebow Broncos starter in 2012 regardless

Without his late game heroics and clutch play under pressure, the Broncos would be riding a 5 game losing streak and would have been eliminated from the playoffs long, long ago.  If anything, this kid doesn't get the credit he deserves.  Wait...we are talking about Matt Prater, aren't we?
