Denver and Kansas City square off on Sunday with plenty at stake: the Broncos want to win the AFC West, and the Chiefs want to give Kyle Orton redemption for being benched and released by Denver earlier this year. Reportedly not at stake, though? Tim Tebow's job as a starter.

That's according to NFL.com's Jeff Darlington, who reports that Tebow is locked as the starter for Denver in 2012, regardless of whether or not the Broncos make the playoffs.

"Sources have indicated, regardless of the outcome Sunday, the Broncos plan to move forward with the mindset that Tebow will remain the team's starter in 2012," Darlington wrote Friday.

Darlington's also got a juicy nugget about the relationship between Orton and Tebow. The Broncos quarterbacks have a fine system that keeps each other accountable (this is common among NFL position players) and the group began fining Tebow when fans bought billboards demanding that Orton be benched and Tebow get starts.

Though this ultimately happened, it pretty clearly created a rift and explains why the Broncos let Orton go. (Darlington also reports that allowing Tebow to have "better control of the locker room" was a deciding factor in Orton's release.) But if letting Orton go ultimately costs the Broncos a shot at the playoffs, it's simply an indefensible decision.

A totally defensible one is keeping Tebow ingrained as the starter. There are many reasons for this. He's under contract in 2012. He won games. He could progress as a passer. There won't be a franchise quarterback available when the Broncos draft next April. Using picks to trade up grab a quarterback ignores other needs. The Broncos are still technically "rebuilding," and drafting defensive players would serve them better. Tim Tebow is an absolute cash cow for the team. Giving him a vote of confidence now only decreases the scrutiny on the situation leading into the final parts of this season.

The list could go on for a while. Which is why it makes a lot of sense for the Broncos to have already arrived at the decision that Tim Tebow's their starter in 2012. Even if their 2011 starter manages to knock them out of the playoff hunt.

More bogus spin. Orton got benched in week 5. He wasn't cut until week 11. Tebow was already 4-1 as the starter at that point (which is better than his record after Kyle was cut). The idea that the fine system "clearly created a rift" is ridiculous, unless Tim Tebow is a complete phony. It's actually pretty clear that it is near impossible to create a rift with Timbo.

As for the reason why Orton was cut - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. The owner/front office are planting these stories to deflect from the fact that releasing KO to KC was (in hindsight) an epically stupid move. The move is made even more stupid by the fact that they did it to save $2.5 mil and now they stand to lose many more millions if Orton beats them and they miss out on a HOME playoff game.

Fortunately for Denver, the imploded Raiders are not likely to beat SD this week anyway. Even an embarrassing home loss to Orton and the Chiefs should not keep them from winning the division.

That is great news for Denver fans....what everyone keeps forgetting is that the guy is a winner and he is in his first full season as an NFL quarterback (before people start correcting me...I understand he is not a rookie).  He will get nothing but better.  The so called "experts" will be eating their words about him within five years.  Win or lose on Sunday at least he has given the Broncos a breath of fresh air.  If Orton had stayed the Broncos were on their way to a 2-14 record.  The only good news with that was they may have possibly gotten LUCKy in the draft.

It makes sense to go with the hot hand until you're able to draft an NFL quality QB.

Good decision by the Broncos.  TT is the future of the Broncos.  He proved it this year on a team that was expected to get about 4 wins getting 9(they will beat the Chiefs)  That is a big statement and even the Broncos can't turn their head to what he has done.

He has two of the best young wide receivers in Thomas and Decker, thats not the problem.  Also the Defense has bailed him out.  They have kept all the games close.  Yes he "lead" them back in all those come from behind games, but they were come from behind because when he goes to throw a screen the either spikes the ball or throws it in the 3rd row.  Im now qb coach, but dude needs more then just mechanics he needs a complete overhaul.  He is amazing to watch, just glad he is not my teams qb.

Wow VoiceofUnreason, Tebow wasn't drafted as the starter???? Whaaaaat, you mean you take a QB in the first round and don't intend to make him the starter???? Dude he was drafted as not only the starter, but the savior, albeit by a different regime.....

I would say that it makes sense to prop up Tebow as the 2012 starter. First of all, why not instill as much confidence in him as possible. Second, who else would they name? Until they stop winning with him regularly, I don't see the other option for the Broncos.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the house on a KC win. Orton must be licking his chops. Tebow was a great story while it lasted, but the bubble was burst last week when my lowly Bills competely dominated a confused and overmatched Tebow. The man had no answers, not a single clue as to what was going on..... A scrambling QB with far below average passing skills will only take you so far. John Elway has the worst job in the world, he is damned if he stays with Tebow and he is completely screwed if you benches or moves him. No good options for the man.....

Report: Tebow Broncos starter in 2012 regardless

it'll be a GREAT MOVE for the Broncos!!  now that teams have figured how to contain the Option Offense, having Tebow as QB will ensure they will be drafting near the top in following Draft (when Barkley's available).  meanwhile, the Broncos make BOAT LOAD of cash and they don't even have to feel bad about it.  instead, it'll be THE FANS that'll apologize to the Broncos for they're uninformed-irrational PROTESTS to have Tebow start...  Broncos make $$$, rebuild in draft while making $$$ and they EVEN GET THE LAST LAUGH!!  not to mention, this will serve as a lesson to all the under 64-IQ fans to not speak up anymore

BRILLIANT MOVE!!
