Report: O'Brien set to become Penn State coach

Brady and O'BrienBy Josh Katzowitz

Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien will be Penn State's next football coach, according to a USA Today report.

As NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora originally reported, O’Brien had emerged as a candidate to become Joe Paterno’s successor at Penn State after Titans coach Mike Munchak said he had no interest in that job. Now, USA Today's Jon Saraceno is reporting that “only contract details need to be finalized before O'Brien is the man.”

The last time we heard from O’Brien, he and Tom Brady were in a screaming match on the sideline during the Redskins game after Brady threw a bad interception in the end zone.

That shone an unfortunate spotlight on O’Brien, who’s been in charge of New England’s offense for the past year (and with the team as its quarterback coach for the past three seasons) and has helped the Patriots become the second-ranked offense in the league by yards and third-ranked by points. O’Brien -- whose contract expires at the end of this season -- has never been a head coach at the pro or college level, though he was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. LaCanfora writes he also could have interest in the Chiefs head coaching job.

Titans first-year coach and Penn State alumnus Mike Munchak has been courted heavily by the school. Though Munchak has been more than definitive, more reports have emerged that say Munchak still is thinking about it.

Also, Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements supposedly participated in a phone interview with Penn State, but that news quickly was denied by all parties.

Report: O'Brien set to become Penn State coach

Hey big daddy 15! I believe you said that the Lions Defense was going to stop Case Keenum. WRONG! Over 200 yards passing in the 1st quarter while your stiffie @ QB has exactly ZERO. Hang in there bro. I understand that Abe Gibron and Mike Singletary are both on their way to Happy Valley to apply for the head coaching gig.

Hey Joe PA Gavin! "It's simply tradition?" Come on bro. The only tradition folks see @ Penn State is good old Jerry sexually abusing young boys for decades. Not that's one tradition we know occurred in Happy Valley. Where are all these 4 star studs that will insure the Nittany Lions a 10-win season annually? I haven't seen any of them on this roster and won't likely see any new ones in the near future with this dark cloud hovering above Beaver Stadium. Your comment that your sons won't go anywhere but State College is exactly why the university finds itself in this situation. You simply can't live in the modern world by shutting off the influences and ideas of what you perceive as different. Period! Sorry bro!

Great, this is not going to be a good fit for PSU! Jabba the Hut AKA Charlie Weis didn't work at ND and this is gonna be worse. These ex pro O coordinators underestimate the quality "D" played in the BiG and often are not very good teachers of the game, something that the current staff members such as Bill Kenney, Ron Vanderlinden, and Larry Johnson and especially Tom Bradley are very good at. I'm afraid PSU is gonna be a non factor for the next decade or so, after the fallout of the scandel we are probably gonna be the next SMU....

You never know how something will work out, but its hard to tell how good someone is with Tom Brady at QB.  Not a lot of success from that coaching tree.
