Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

S. Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

During a season in which the captaincy of Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has repeatedly been questioned -- and for good reason -- the last game of New York’s season ended early for Holmes. During the Jets 19-17 loss, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer benched Holmes in the fourth quarter, according to the Newark Star Ledger

“I looked out there, and I was wondering why he wasn’t out there myself," coach Rex Ryan said. "I didn’t bench Santonio. You’ll have to ask him."

Holmes said it was the “coach’s call,” and according to his teammates, he argued with teammates in the huddle and pouted on the sidelines during the game. He also didn’t catch a single pass in the Jets loss (he was targeted just once).

After signing a five-year, $45 million free agent contract before the season, Holmes has been an embarrassment as a team captain. Although Ryan has defended him in the past, Holmes has been hit with celebration penalties, has complained publicly about the offensive line and has participated in a supposed mutiny against Schottenheimer.

Asked after the game if he wanted to return to New York next year, Holmes said simply, “Thank you guys” and ended his news conference.

"Let me just say that there were guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone’s demeanor," running back LaDainian Tomlinson told reporters. “And when you have a group of guys who are fighting their butts off, and one guy who -- for whatever reason, his demeanor isn’t with ‘em -- you’ll have guys try to say something to him, just pretty much tell him how they feel. That’s what you got today.

"I’ll tell you what, it’s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner. When you’re a captain, guys are looking at you, you’ve got to lead by example. You’ve got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that don’t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn’t be looked at. You should always put yourself out there as a leader. "

And apparently, today wasn’t the first time Holmes' effort has been questioned.

“He quit," one player told the paper. "It's happened for the past two to three weeks. It's happened all season."

Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

Antonio Brown has had a great season and Mike Wallace is a star now and in the near future BUT do not forget that Santonio made a catch that won the Steelers a Super Bowl. Not just any receiver makes that catch. He is an idiot now and maybe he was one before but Steeler fans should not be calling him out. That guy hooked you guys up big time and for that you should be grateful.

I sure am glad that the Steelers got rid of Santonio and picked up Antonio. Somebody got a little big for his britches. Santonio, your replacement in Pittsburgh will be at the pro-bowl along with another Steeler reciever, that is unless they are in Indy the following week.

I gotta say that being a Jets fan I never thought he should have been named team captain anyway.  Captians are named after years of paying dues and showing dedication to your team and earning the respect of your teammates.  He was named simply because they made a huge (and now foollish) investment at WR.  Captains should never gloat or showboat, it's just childish.  This includes Sanchez and that whole Flight Crew thing they do.  There should be two captains on that team and they are Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis.  They are the only two players that are pro-bowlers and conduct themselves professionally.  It's disrespectful to the other players on the team to name captians and then have them act like fools!!

Jet's players may like Ryan, but they certainly don't respect him. The evidence is in their actions, their lack of heart, their effort.
