Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

S. Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

During a season in which the captaincy of Jets receiver Santonio Holmes has repeatedly been questioned -- and for good reason -- the last game of New York’s season ended early for Holmes. During the Jets 19-17 loss, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer benched Holmes in the fourth quarter, according to the Newark Star Ledger

“I looked out there, and I was wondering why he wasn’t out there myself," coach Rex Ryan said. "I didn’t bench Santonio. You’ll have to ask him."

Holmes said it was the “coach’s call,” and according to his teammates, he argued with teammates in the huddle and pouted on the sidelines during the game. He also didn’t catch a single pass in the Jets loss (he was targeted just once).

After signing a five-year, $45 million free agent contract before the season, Holmes has been an embarrassment as a team captain. Although Ryan has defended him in the past, Holmes has been hit with celebration penalties, has complained publicly about the offensive line and has participated in a supposed mutiny against Schottenheimer.

Asked after the game if he wanted to return to New York next year, Holmes said simply, “Thank you guys” and ended his news conference.

"Let me just say that there were guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone’s demeanor," running back LaDainian Tomlinson told reporters. “And when you have a group of guys who are fighting their butts off, and one guy who -- for whatever reason, his demeanor isn’t with ‘em -- you’ll have guys try to say something to him, just pretty much tell him how they feel. That’s what you got today.

"I’ll tell you what, it’s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner. When you’re a captain, guys are looking at you, you’ve got to lead by example. You’ve got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that don’t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn’t be looked at. You should always put yourself out there as a leader. "

And apparently, today wasn’t the first time Holmes' effort has been questioned.

“He quit," one player told the paper. "It's happened for the past two to three weeks. It's happened all season."

Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

Jet are in an intersesting position right now with Sanchez. He helped get them to back to back Afc champ games so  i find it difficult to believe they bring in anything but a backup qb at most. I think ryan will give the kid another shot. Snachez stunk up the joint when it mattered most but maybe this will help him gett better at taking care of the football.  the jets could have a similar year in '12, I just don't see how they get better on D to put them back atop the afc.

Holmes....for a guy who really has a ton of talent he sure is wasting it. He is a good Wr, but he'll never be as great as I think he could be if he has this attitude. it's obvious his teammates question him and I bet most of the o-line really can't stand him. He has some work to do from the inside out starting with his teammates. Jets are in an interesting position going into next year.....

Jets captain Holmes benched in fourth quarter

I agree with the youth statement. I'm a Jets fan who happens to live in Central Illinois and from what I saw this year was a team without an identity. They were hoping Shonn Greene could take over for Thomas Jones, which he clearly cannot and they were hoping that the defense still had some youth left. They also didnt tackle well all season, instead hoping to pad their individual takeaway stats by stripping the ball versus making sure the guy was tackled. Have to draft well this year, bring in a QB to challenge Sancez (Flynn maybe) and bring Norv Turner and let Shott move on. Finally Rex has to learn how to coach and make sure he knows whats going on with his coaches. Definitely an embarrasment this year and Ryan has to take that blame as well as the overpriced players (Holmes, Cromartie, etc).

“I looked out there, and I was wondering why he wasn’t out there myself," coach Rex Ryan said.  Um, quick question for you coach;  How, on what is clearly the most important drive of the season, did you, the head coach, not realize that one of your best skill players was not on the field?  You're not the offensive coordinator, I get that, but shouldn't you have some idea of your personel? Oh, and great choice for captain.  Holmes has been a punk from day one.  And during the last game of the season, his teammates finally let him, and everyone else know how they felt.  Wonder how long that's been brewing?  5 years, 45 mill for a guy who acts like he invented electricity when he catches an 8 yard pass for a 1st down.  It's gonna be a long off season for you and that "brain trust" in New York.  Good luck winning the Super Bowl this,...oops...NEXT year, you pantload.

The problem with the Jets are guys like Holmes who talk way too much and have done very little to help. I do believe a huge house cleaning is coming for the Jets, but not in coaches, but in players. Guys like LT and Santonio have made this team in the past, but this teams needs some serious youth and now is the time. I do think they can remain good without totally gutting the roster

He quit because his scrubby QB can't get the ball to him and just turns it over all the time anyway. Yes the OC probably should have done a bit better, but with that QB he is limited himself. Apparently Jets fans think you can just run the ball every down and win in the NFL. No, you need to be able to throw the rock, if you can't do that, you need a new QB. How many QBs threw over or near 5000 yards this year? How many more topped 4000? Did anybody watch Matt Flynn go out there and throw for almost 500 yards and 6 TDs? It's a passing league, and the Jets can't pass the ball. You can't blame the OC for that. He's tried to do what it takes to win in the NFL now but his QB can't do anything right.

Paying Holmes that much and making him Captain was also stupid however. That falls on the clown buffoon of a HC that the Jets have. When you constantly make a fool of yourself and your team, your players follow your lead and become buffoons themselves. The Steelers organization was close to kicking Ben out, the Rooneys were extremely angry and Tomlin was unhappy himself, but at the least Ben didn't let that type of stuff bleed out onto the field and in his actions towards his teammates. Holmes however is not the same, so he was shipped out. He's not even really that great either, nobody will confuse him for Megatron.
