With everything that happened with the Jets over the past 24 hours -- missing the playoffs, fighting with the media, in-fighting and whatnot -- you wouldn't be surprised if Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum decided to blow some stuff up. But they won't.

Ryan and Tannebaum confirmed on Monday during a press conference that Santonio Holmes, the player primarily deemed responsible for locker-room issues, would return, and that much-maligned offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer would be back, barring another team (like Jacksonville) hiring him as their head coach.

Black Monday

"I believe Santonio will be back next year," Ryan said.

The pair were pelted with questions about Holmes and team chemistry and Ryan said they would do away with team captains altogether.

"I made a huge mistake," Ryan said. "Not just by naming Santonio a captain. With all the captains. It's not something I truly believe in."

When the Jets announced the press conference for Monday, speculation started to ramp up that the Jets could do away with Holmes altogether. However, as Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reported, Holmes is guaranteed more than $7 million in 2012 (with another $7 million of future salary becoming fully guaranteed on the second day of the 2012 league year).

Which is to say, the Jets can't really even consider releasing Holmes. They've simply got to find a way to get him to be better in the locker room. (Tannenbaum wouldn't comment on whether Santonio was disciplined for his behavior the last week.)

As for other issues, Tannenbaum said that Mark Sanchez will remain the starting quarterback in 2012. And Rex indicated there wouldn't be any changes on the coaching staff as of right now.

Oh and Rex's excuse for crying to his team in the locker room on Monday?

"Ah, Im Irish."

Romo are you kidding? I know Sanchez is not the answer in NY but Romo hasn't exactly won with more talent around him than the Jets have.

The Jets let all their leaders on the offensive side of the ball go over the last 2 years. Players such as Thomas Jones, Jericho Cotchery, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody and Tony Richardson are the main reason why the "great" Mark Sanchez has 4 playoff wins. To make Santonio Holmes a captain was a joke...their is a reason why the Steelers dumped him for a 5th round draft pick.

holmes ia a spoiled me me me that will unquestionably ruin any chemistry in the locker room.  he says one thing and does something altogether different, all the friggin time.  not sure, but this seems to be a pattern from a LOT of former ohio state players.  perhaps they were conditioned to think this way while they were being tutored at OSU.  word of advice...cut his ass or trade him (if there are any takers) before he sets the entire house on fire and burns it to the ground!

Holmes should come back. Its not his fault and it starts with that sorry offensive coordinator throwing the ball time after time when he knows
Sanchez is only a game manager and he can't really air the ball out and get the ball down the field. Second the jets need to get a real QB and draft that kid out of baylor or try and trade for tony romo. He is a much better upgrade than Sanchez and last but nopt least Ryan is a good coach but he needs to shut his mouth and let his team play ball and draft some real pass rushers and the jets will be fine and to all the haters dogging Shonn Greene he did a pretty good job considering him playing with sorry Sanchez he did excellent and he will be much improved next season with a real QB under center next season!

You really want to cure the Jets? Start by firing Ryan and his whole staff, follow that up by trading or just releasing the unremarkable Mark Sanchez. If I were Holmes I'd want out of that place too! As I said on another site, Santonio Holmes is whining like a little girl whos bf is not treating her right. The girl is right and she need to get another bf. LOL! Have a great day. I think the whole Jets team needs to grow up and that includes Santonio Holmes. So much talent and so unable to harness it.

not a Jets rag rant...want that stated up front.

Pats had Terry Glenn.  There seems to be some similarities between Holmes and Glenn at first glance.

But how do you bring this guy back?

You have quotes from players saying he quit.  He quit on his QB, he quit on games, he quit on his team.
His QB is supposedly on record as saying he is a cancer...ouch.

OK, that's a big problem right there.

Do you get him a counselor over the off-season?  It isn't like he will change on his own.

He's not tradeable.  His salary structure keeps you from cutting him.

Damn, that's a tough spot to be in...
