Tomlin: Ryan Clark won't play in Denver

Pittsburgh will be short-handed in the secondary when they face Denver Sunday. (US PRESSWIRE)

The Steelers will face the Broncos in the wild-card round Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET and they'll do it without two of their best players. Running back Rashard Mendenhall tore his ACL against the Browns in Week 17 and his season is over. Safety Ryan Clark is healthy, at least as sea level, but a sickle-cell trait that is triggered at high altitudes will keep him on the bench in Denver (elevation 5,280 feet).

According to CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Chuck Finder, head coach Mike Tomlin said during his Tuesday press conference that playing Clark wasn’t worth the risk, especially since Clark lost a spleen and gall bladder after playing in Denver in 2007.

Pittsburgh's coach called it an "easy decision," adding “I met with Ryan Clark yesterday and informed him I’m not going to let him play for obvious reasons. It is a big game for us, but it is a game. We’ll keep it in perspective.”

Clark tweeted Tuesday: "Well I guess we all know now. I will not be playing. Glad that it's out now. So no more questions to ask. Thanks for your concern!"

Ryan Mundy, the team's 2008 sixth-round pick out of West Virginia, is expected to fill in for Clark. Mundy has two career starts, both coming in 2010 filling in for an injured Troy Polamalu. He has one career interception, which came in Week 12 against the Chiefs, as well as a 33-yard reception on a fake punt earlier this season against the Titans.

The Steelers traveled to Denver for a 2010 preseason game and Clark didn't play then, either. He worked out on the field before kickoff without incident but the fear of damage to his brain and/or heart clearly wasn't worth the potential consequences.

Was it even a consideration??
"Well, he still has two kidneys and two lungs and it IS a playoff game......"

I hate to see Ryan Clark miss this game, but this for all intent and purposes was a matter of life and death for him. Not only was this an "easy decision" for Mike Tomlin, but it was a no-brainer.

Okay Mr. Mundy this is now your opportunity to shine and make a name for yourself on a big stage (the playoffs). Don't let this golden opportunity pass you by.

Go Steelers!!!!

Ravens fan here.  Ummm ... why was Clark on the field for a pre-season game in 2010?  After the incident in 2007?!?  For real.  This is the strangest thing I have read so far this year.  Steelers organization should not have let Ryan Clark take that trip in 2010.

For a preseason game.  Wow.
You're mistaken.  Will Allen started at safety in that game.  The last time Pittsburgh was in Denver, Clark sat out the game as well.  This isn't some new information that's just coming about.

The article clearly states he was "worked out on the field before kickoff..." His condition only gives him issues when it triggers hypoxia. Essentially lack of sufficient oxygen getting to the brain/body. It's caused by extreme or strenuous physical exertion. Hardly what happens when the players are shagging kicks or jogging during pregame.

Glad you made it clear that you're a Ravens fan. The pure genius in your comment didn't make it clear enough. Oh, and this is a Steelers fan here.

He practically has the week off if he plays. Not like Denver is going to throw it. Passing game is #Teboned

This is the right thing to do and I hate to see Ryan Clark have to s it out of the Pittsburgh Steelers playoff game, but risking your life to play in a game isn't worth it! The Steelers should win this game no matter what and we'll see Clark back on the field the following week.

Lets face the ONLY way the Broncos win this game is by playing mistake FREE football ! And of course the steelers have to NOT play mistake free! They would need a couple turnovers and a lot of LUCK and atleast 2 TEBOWINGS! Im a big Denver fan would love too see them play hard and get lucky!with all the injurys with the Steelers there is a chance but a very small one!
