Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

This isn't a huge shock, but the Eagles are bringing back Andy Reid, the NFL's longest-tenured coach, for at least one more season.

Jeffrey Lurie, Eagles owner, announced as much (in a lengthy fashion!) during a press conference Tuesday.

"I want to see our team coached by Andy Reid next year and I can't wait," Lurie said. "If our goal is to win title, Andy Reid is our guy."

Lurie also added that any coaching changes are "up to Andy" -- the most obvious decision everyone's wondering about is the possibility of changing defensive coordinators. Juan Castillo was, arguably, more embattled in 2011 than any head coach in the NFL and it won't sit well with the locals if he remains the defensive coordinator, particularly with ex-Eagles coach Steve Spagnuolo now on the free-agent market.

Of course, the Eagles defense was substantially better down the stretch in 2011, but don't think Lurie didn't notice the schedule they had.

In his press conference, Lurie pointed to the Eagles strong close to the season and said that to hold onto a four-game winning streak against teams that didn't make the playoffs would be "fool's gold."

"I think there was a miscalculation of implementing scheme changes in a post-lockout season," Lurie said when pressed about Castillo's status. "Anyone who's known Juan Castillo knows he's an incredibly impressive man. Was he put into a tough situation early? Tough to say."

But Lurie added that the decision to keep or not keep Castillo was completely up to Reid. The only difference, based on Lurie's comments Tuesday, is that Reid would be wise to get his team motivated to play before December this season, otherwise 2011 won't go down as the "most disappointing" season of his career.

Next year will.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

At least the Eagles are in the hunt nearly every year.  I think allowing Reid another year is fair.  I think the Eagles will be back in the hunt next season, but if they aren't, removing Reid would not be shocking.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

I am so sick and tired of the same old descriptions of Philadelphia and their fans.  While I agree that Vick is the scum of the earth I do think that if put in the right situation he has a chance to win a Super Bowl.  Let's also be realistic here, every team in the NFL has thugs on it.  By your comments I would probably guess that you are a cockroach Cowboys fan?  Also, have you ever been to Philly?  The reason the fans are so hard on their players is because they are some of the most intelligent in the league.  They can't be fooled.  Next time just do me a favor and bring up the Santa Claus incident you dumbass!

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

Reid wins alot of football games, but he seems to always lose the important games and I am tired of hearing his excuse that it was his fault.  He needs to work on a few things, the most pressing is time management!  I have never seen a team manage the clock worse than the Eagles.  I know Andy prides himself on being the steady emotionless leader, but sometimes you need to have that emotion to wake your team up.  The inconsistency of the team is unreal, there are weeks when they look unbeatable, then come back next week and look like a pop warner team.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

I am not like people in the greater fan base of the Eagles. Born and raised in Iowa, our state is not relevant enough for a NFL team. Since 1980 I have been an EAGLE. I say this with the utmost pride and I believe that Andy Reid is going to be the face of the franchise for many years to come. In a PERFECT WORLD Andy would hire Spag to be D.C. and tutor Castillo, because I think that he has alot to learn. It is true that the team played better down the stretch, BUT we need to beat teams like the Bears, 49ers, Cardnals, and Seahawks! The talent is there, and I do not want to go backwards to coaches that we have had to endure in the past. I believe this is  a title team and AR is the coach to do it. He had several years in the earlier part of this decade when he made it to the title game with players with less talent. Next year these birds of war are going to rise and destroy the Nfc. We already own our devision. Just a few people need to be re-signed (D-Jax, and Shady) and a good draft that includes LBs.

The goal of all NFL teams is to WIN A SUPER BOWL. Reid/Vic = NEVER HAPPEN.  With that, all the "Tweaking" during the off season, will amount to another year of losers.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

This is the right move for the Philadelphia Eagles in my opinion. Andy Reid is a solid football coach and the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. The Eagles front office went away from their team building philosophy this past offseason and tried to buy a Super Bowl and it backfired on them. I include Andy Reid in that, but he shouldn't have to be the scapegoat like the Red Sox did to manager Terry Francona.

So long as he  has a decent draft and makes good moves on D, I'm ok with AR coming back. when they executed The eagles were a great team but boy when it went bad it went bad didn't it?  He's fired for sure unless he can guide them to the championship game at least. I like his chances though.

KLM get a Life! I thought we were here to talk Football not about You being a Judge and Jury... Anyway I think giving Andy another chance is Smart because now they know they will have to tweek their Team to be the Best in the East. Completely dismantleing the team would have been the next option.

I'm not sure Cowher was with the Steelers without winning the SB quite as long as Reid's been here,
Cowher had just as many flaws as Reid, and was the Steelers coach for 15 years.  It took him 14 to win a Super Bowl.

Blitz, we can only hope you're right.  But it won't necessarily turn out either of those ways.  You know how it goes: they get off to a good start in 2012, and eight games in Reid's agent tells Lurie they want a contract extension--saying, "Well, this is necessary if you want Andy to have the necessary authority with the players," blah, blah, blah.  And Lurie may very well fall for it, as I believe he has in the past.  Then they don't win the Super Bowl next year--or they even fall out of the playoffs early again or don't make them again--and then Reid's still here anyway for 2013 with a nice new extension and no Super Bowl.  Unless Lurie feels like eating all those salary years, which he's never shown any sign of being willing to do yet.
No contract in football is guaranteed, not even the coaches.  As for Andy Reid's contract?  It's one of the lowest in the NFL iirc.  So what if Lurie has to eat anything, the guy is loaded and so are the Eagles.
