Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

This isn't a huge shock, but the Eagles are bringing back Andy Reid, the NFL's longest-tenured coach, for at least one more season.

Jeffrey Lurie, Eagles owner, announced as much (in a lengthy fashion!) during a press conference Tuesday.

"I want to see our team coached by Andy Reid next year and I can't wait," Lurie said. "If our goal is to win title, Andy Reid is our guy."

Lurie also added that any coaching changes are "up to Andy" -- the most obvious decision everyone's wondering about is the possibility of changing defensive coordinators. Juan Castillo was, arguably, more embattled in 2011 than any head coach in the NFL and it won't sit well with the locals if he remains the defensive coordinator, particularly with ex-Eagles coach Steve Spagnuolo now on the free-agent market.

Of course, the Eagles defense was substantially better down the stretch in 2011, but don't think Lurie didn't notice the schedule they had.

In his press conference, Lurie pointed to the Eagles strong close to the season and said that to hold onto a four-game winning streak against teams that didn't make the playoffs would be "fool's gold."

"I think there was a miscalculation of implementing scheme changes in a post-lockout season," Lurie said when pressed about Castillo's status. "Anyone who's known Juan Castillo knows he's an incredibly impressive man. Was he put into a tough situation early? Tough to say."

But Lurie added that the decision to keep or not keep Castillo was completely up to Reid. The only difference, based on Lurie's comments Tuesday, is that Reid would be wise to get his team motivated to play before December this season, otherwise 2011 won't go down as the "most disappointing" season of his career.

Next year will.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

You could take Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, and Chuck Knoll, combine them into one super coach and the Eagles wouldn't even make it to the NFC championship game, because as long as you have dog killer Vick at QB and wannabe thugs like DeSean Jackson you will never win the games that count.  History has proven that Michael Vick is not a winner when winning really counts and that's only half the time because the other half he is on the sideline hurt.  I don't like Michael Vick, in my opinion he is the biggest scum bag in the NFL, but my personal feeling aside he isn't a good QB and doesn't have what it takes to win a SuperBowl.

Just take last season for an example, the Eagles needed only to beat the horrible Minnesota Vikings on the second to last game of the 2010 season and they would have locked up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but even with a healthy Michael Vick and Eagles team behind him, he still couldn't even beat Joe Webb, a rookie QB in his first start ever in the NFL.  Then of course you have the 2010 wild card playoff game against the Pakers where once again when Vick needed to lead his team down the field to win the game, he can't handle the moment and throws an interception, which is how all important games Michael Vick is a part of end.

I personally think that anyone who backs Michael Vick is a low life roundmouth. which is probably why the Eagles chose to sign Vick, because they knew that he would fit right in with their fans who are known around sports as the lowest class of fans in the world.  Watching the Eagles suck this season was great and watching them suck next season will be even better.    &nbs

Enjoy the future, Eagles fans! The walrus is here to stay.  They say football is an insider's game, and it must be... only insiders would see what millions of viewers think is absurd.

Reid has spoiled all of you.  How good was this team before he got here?  I'll remind you.  They sucked.  Yes, we haven't won a super bowl, but he has taken us to the playoffs, and deep into them, many times. Most teams can't say that.  Why don't all of you haters find another team.  When Reid wins next year all of you will be on here praising him

I think he deserve 1 more shot and if the "dream team" don't make it next yr, he's gone. How's that for pressure?

@mauxdeverite...You can't blame Vick.  Reid made the decision to get Vick.  Reid made the decision to move Castillo to defensive coordinator.  Reid makes the time management blunders.  Reid makes the drafting blunders year after year.  Do you see a pattern here?  Reid IS the problem.  Yes, Johnson was a huge loss, but teams lose coaches every year.  I think keeping Vick was a mistake, but so is keeping Reid.

Section_725, thanks for the clarification and info.

For those of you who are asking for Fisher: Why him? He's one of the few people around to have coached the same team for about as long as Reid has WITHOUT winning a Super Bowl. What kind of a recommendation is that?

Agreed. Reid has 2 years left on his deal while Vick has 1 more guaranteed year. Wouldn't have been fair to anew coach saddeling him with Vick and his turnovers. Laughing

I like Reid and think he should stay, but I would rather have Jeff Fisher coaching the Eagles.  This team is so talented but they need a no BS coach.  If the Eagles could get Fisher, I would support a move, but only if they could get Fisher...

It's a money decision.  Lurie signed Reid through 2012 way back when he should have been fired.  There were numerous occasions to let Reid go, such as getting embarrassed (shut out) by Tampa Bay in our brand new stadium on opening night, not knowing that a regular season game can end in a tie, to spend time with his troublesome sons, for never ever having the team ready for opening day, for giving the same excuses after every loss ("I have to do a better job"), but nevery doing it, or learning from past mistakes (clock management), for dropping the Jenny Craig diet after 6 months, etcetera etcetera!
