Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

This isn't a huge shock, but the Eagles are bringing back Andy Reid, the NFL's longest-tenured coach, for at least one more season.

Jeffrey Lurie, Eagles owner, announced as much (in a lengthy fashion!) during a press conference Tuesday.

"I want to see our team coached by Andy Reid next year and I can't wait," Lurie said. "If our goal is to win title, Andy Reid is our guy."

Lurie also added that any coaching changes are "up to Andy" -- the most obvious decision everyone's wondering about is the possibility of changing defensive coordinators. Juan Castillo was, arguably, more embattled in 2011 than any head coach in the NFL and it won't sit well with the locals if he remains the defensive coordinator, particularly with ex-Eagles coach Steve Spagnuolo now on the free-agent market.

Of course, the Eagles defense was substantially better down the stretch in 2011, but don't think Lurie didn't notice the schedule they had.

In his press conference, Lurie pointed to the Eagles strong close to the season and said that to hold onto a four-game winning streak against teams that didn't make the playoffs would be "fool's gold."

"I think there was a miscalculation of implementing scheme changes in a post-lockout season," Lurie said when pressed about Castillo's status. "Anyone who's known Juan Castillo knows he's an incredibly impressive man. Was he put into a tough situation early? Tough to say."

But Lurie added that the decision to keep or not keep Castillo was completely up to Reid. The only difference, based on Lurie's comments Tuesday, is that Reid would be wise to get his team motivated to play before December this season, otherwise 2011 won't go down as the "most disappointing" season of his career.

Next year will.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

Anybody would be better than Castillo, but I don't think Andy will make any changes.  He has proven to be stubborn over the years.  There is no way this team can win a Super Bowl with an offensive line coach as their defensive coordinator.  We will be putting our D-coordinator against some of the best offenses in football.  Ugh.  I said this a year ago, when Castillo got the new job.

As far as the draft...  The Eagles won't take a linebacker in round one.  Mark my word.  Although "linebacker" is their biggest need, the Eagles won't spend first round money on a linebacker.  I suspect they will draft an offensive lineman or a defensive tackle in round one.  A good safety is also needed.  I suspect they will try to get some linebacker help through free agency.  We will see.

I don't expect too much from this group in 2012 as they stand now, but a lot can happen between now and this time next year.  Let's see if they can click through their long list of problems.

1.  Defensive Coordinator -  You have the best corners in football.  You need to use them in a scheme that shows their worth.
2.  Linebackers - All linebacker positions are well below those teams in the playoffs.
3.  Offensive line - Let's not forget that Vick ran for his life all season.
4.  Defensive tackles - Jenkins was OK, but he was Packer reject.  We have a long way to go to compete.
5.  Safeties - Allen was not good this year.  He is soft and can't cover.  Coleman is a disgrace.

It would be in Andy Reid's best interest to draft a Middle linebacker

Shark, I might agree, but (a) for whatever silly reason, Reid doesn't believe in drafting linebackers in the first round (and rarely in the second), and (b) I don't know whether there's a good middle linebacker available in the first round.  I'm not saying there won't be--I'm no draft-analysis freak--I just don't know.  And you know he's not going to draft one if there's not--and probably not even if there is.
along with getting Steve Spagnuolo as his defensive Coordinator
Maybe, although I don't know how good the Rams' defense was this year on their way to 2-14.  I haven't checked the stats, but I do know they gave up a fair number of points.  No, he wasn't his own defensive coordinator, but when you're the head coach and go 2-14 you have to bear some responsibility--just as Reid does for a defense that leads you to 8-8.

They haven't had a good draft pick in 4 years.
LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin weren't good picks?

And Nate Allen will be a good safety.  He's just getting over a bad injury which has a long recovery time.

Eagles bring back Reid, coaching changes his call

I know it's going to piss off a bunch of fans, but just accept it and move on.  Next year, his 14th, will be Andy's last year to prove he can get it done.  However, like any head coach in the league, he's going to need a staff that is competent enough to help him win.  Can Juan Castillo get his defense to play an entire season they way they did down the stretch?  I have my doubts.  Why not bring Spags, Jim Johnson's true protege, back into the fold?

I was asked before how much longer does one give Andy Reid, or how much longer do we have to withstand him?  I said 2012 and I was right.  So in 2013, you'll end getting what you want.  Reid gone or a Super Bowl.

Wake me up when Andy is gone

Once again the Eagles will be mediocre and not win a Superbowl next year or following. So once Jim Johnson dies the Eagles blow on defense  and have put up historically awful NFL defensive numbers, and Andy Reid can't handle this team. Screw the Eagles they suck. 85% of coaches who win a superbowl do it in their first 4 years with that team. We are going on year 14 with ANDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fire this guy, he puts an offensive line coach as a defensive coordinator???????????? They haven't had a good draft pick in 4 years. Thank god I have the Phillies and Flyers, at least they make changes after a few years of not winning it. Those GM's get it and the Eagles have no clue how to go for it.
