Jeff Fisher's the hottest name in coaching right now, likely getting his pick of open jobs around the NFL. But here's a spicy meatball: Fisher's top choice of NFL gigs isn't one that's open, as he reportedly has "always wanted" the Chicago Bears job.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

That's what Albert Breer of NFL Network reported on Tuesday night, and it's a bit of a stunner, though the connected dots do make some sense. For starters, Fisher was a Bear when he was in the NFL from 1981-1984. According to Breer, Fisher has "maintained a close relationship with ownership" since his playing time.

Additionally, Fisher's old offensive coordinator, the late Mike Heimerdinger, worked with current Bears quarterback in Denver ... where Cutler played only because Bud Adams forced the Titans to draft Vince Young over Cutler in 2006. (Also, re: Cutler; he played at Vanderbilt. Which is in Nashville. Which is where the Titans are. There's a connection here.)

Breer notes that Fisher is also "aware of the player Cutler has become" since leaving Denver. Ultimately, Cutler would satisfy Fisher's desire for a franchise quarterback at his next job. And the Bears defense is a pretty good building block to start with.

Just one problem: Lovie Smith's still coaching in Chicago. Despite firing their general manager, the Bears decided that Smith "will remain" as the coach of the organization. So there's no place for Fisher in Chicago right now, and Breer writes that it ultimately isn't something that's likely to happen, and the "more likely result" is Fisher landing with the Rams.

The Bears would need a significant swing in management -- a la Bill Polian -- in order to warrant that sort of drastic coaching change. But if the 2012 coaching carousel's taught us anything, it's that the unexpected is pretty normal and ruling anything out is foolish.

Well Jeff . . . . .  the Bears would have to fire Lovie first and I'm surprised they did but I guess  it's because they didn't want to eat his conyract.

Report: Jeff Fisher has 'always wanted' Bears job

Are you freakin' serious?? Putting the Lions with the Packers??? That gifted team will be looking up at the Bears for years. As for the Packers; I would have loved to have seen a healthy Bears team play them on Christmas.

Yardog.  Why do you waste people's times with posts like that man?  Seriously?  If you know a thing about the NFL, then you know for sure the Bears are on their way down, not up.   The Bears have a questionable offensive line and a defense that regressed this year in a big way, not to mention Urlacher just suffered an injury that at this point in his career can't be very good.  They don't have a wide reciever, unless you wanna call a kick returner a wide reciever.  They have a great player in Forte that not only got hurt but is very unhappy in Chicago.  They can franchise him if they like, but it doesn't look like he's signing a long term deal anymore

Love them or hate them, the Lions are on their way up, that's for sure.  If you honestly don't see the Bears looking down at the Packers for the next 2 or 3 years at the very least then you really need to learn something about this game we call football.

As for your comment comparing the Bears to the Packers, I have nothing to say except one thing.... that was STUPID beyond belief.

If the G-Men lose to Atlanta on Sunday they should make a strong push for Fisher.  No disresepct to Coughlin, but Fisher would be a perfect fit for the next decade.

I'll go ahead and laugh with Smoot, so the Bears, who are 2-7 over the past 4 years against the Packers (including playoffs) would have beat the Packers in week 16?  It might have been closer, but I don't see the aging Bears defense doing any better against Rodgers and 5 TD passes.  It's great to see your strong loyalty to your 'Monsters of the Midway', but the Bears are definitely in need of some retooling before they are contenders again.

Fisher never wanted Vince Young on the team, and Young's failures were in large part due to the fact that he was about as mentally tough as tissue paper.

yardog59 - What a fricken joke of a statement. The gifted team will be looking up at the Bears for years???...LOL. How bout this year fool!!! When that gifted team (Lions) looks down at the Bears if anyone of those Lions players said anything there would be an echo. That's how far the Bears are now below the Lions!!!
Then you even have nards enough to copare a healthy Bears team to the Pack if the Bears were healthy...that's even a bigger joke. The Bears lost 4 times in 1 calander year to the Packers...and you have the nards to say...Oh only if the Bears would have been healthy for the Christmas game. NOT!!! The Bears have lost tons talent wise on both the Packers and Lions in the last couple of years and now there whole team is in disaray, and if the Bears would happen to lose their whole team (Forte) in free agency...Lord help them!!!
Hint...the Bears need at least 1 WR to be considered a team...they don't have one...ok...yes they do but he plays RB.

I dont understand how people cannot understand that the Bears are playing nice with Lovie until the new GM comes in. The McCaskeys and Phillips of the world do not have the stones to fire Lovie, especially after their latest pressers singing his praises.

This is exactly what the Cubs did with Theo and Quade. The Cubs did nothing, were public in support of Quade and made its Theo's call/problem.

The next GM of the Bears will do the same citing "philosophical differences" (thanks for that Martz)
