Jeff Fisher's the hottest name in coaching right now, likely getting his pick of open jobs around the NFL. But here's a spicy meatball: Fisher's top choice of NFL gigs isn't one that's open, as he reportedly has "always wanted" the Chicago Bears job.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

That's what Albert Breer of NFL Network reported on Tuesday night, and it's a bit of a stunner, though the connected dots do make some sense. For starters, Fisher was a Bear when he was in the NFL from 1981-1984. According to Breer, Fisher has "maintained a close relationship with ownership" since his playing time.

Additionally, Fisher's old offensive coordinator, the late Mike Heimerdinger, worked with current Bears quarterback in Denver ... where Cutler played only because Bud Adams forced the Titans to draft Vince Young over Cutler in 2006. (Also, re: Cutler; he played at Vanderbilt. Which is in Nashville. Which is where the Titans are. There's a connection here.)

Breer notes that Fisher is also "aware of the player Cutler has become" since leaving Denver. Ultimately, Cutler would satisfy Fisher's desire for a franchise quarterback at his next job. And the Bears defense is a pretty good building block to start with.

Just one problem: Lovie Smith's still coaching in Chicago. Despite firing their general manager, the Bears decided that Smith "will remain" as the coach of the organization. So there's no place for Fisher in Chicago right now, and Breer writes that it ultimately isn't something that's likely to happen, and the "more likely result" is Fisher landing with the Rams.

The Bears would need a significant swing in management -- a la Bill Polian -- in order to warrant that sort of drastic coaching change. But if the 2012 coaching carousel's taught us anything, it's that the unexpected is pretty normal and ruling anything out is foolish.

Report: Jeff Fisher has 'always wanted' Bears job

This may be funny if you were a Steeler Fan, but unfortunately, you are a Browns fan.  Your team is the epitome of absolute NFL horridness....and you are calling out the Bears, Lovie, and Fisher?   Lovie and Fisher have each coached a team to the Super Bowl, which is exactly 2 more than the Browns have played in my 36 years of life.  And in fact, the Bears have played in 2 in my lifetime.  Fisher was great in Tennessee, and just about any fan would take Fisher as a head coach.  Fisher was right on Vince Young!

Who wants to have to face the Packers and Lions twice every year?  That's coaching suicide.

Report: Jeff Fisher has 'always wanted' Bears job

Jeff Fisher is a very good coach...one of the best, if not the best, available. He spent his entire career working for a famously difficult, extremely tight-fisted owner. Fisher and his staff probably developed more 'no-name' players than any other and usually had the Titans in the playoff mix. In most other environments, Fisher's record would be even more impressive.

I'm sure this makes Lovie feel all warm and fuzzy, knowing that Porn Stache is angling for his job.

Fisher is highly over-rated, a mediocre coach at best. Come to think of it, a good fit for da Bears.

Report: Jeff Fisher has 'always wanted' Bears job

Well that is not good news for Smith.  Do you honestly think that the next GM for the Bears is going to keep Smith?  Not with Fisher out there and wanting the job.  Fisher will revamp that defense and will at least gamble sometimes instead of playng conservative.  The first thing the Bears need to do is sign Forte.  Fisher would be a great fit for the Bears and with the mad Martz pass happy offense dismantled it's time for an overhaul and fresh start.Cool

everyone bashing fisher for how he handles playes.. lets see you tried to draft cutler, and where forced to take young..  he also had to deal with haynesworth. also the same coach that drafted jevon kearse  and mcnair..  had pretty good teams with low talent as far as im concered..  kevin dyson was dudes best reciever..  and mason but they were no star players.. mcnair eddie george and wycheck.. thats where offense.. look at lovie smiths teams and that beast ass D . smith has had way better teams and done less and fisher had less done more.. .. wish the colts would try and hire him..
