Report: Bill O'Brien to interview at PSU Thursday

O'Brien

By Josh Katzowitz

First, there was a USA Today report that said Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien would be the next head coach at Penn State and that “only contract details need to be finalized before O'Brien is the man.” Then, two days ago, word emerged that O’Brien wasn’t headed to Happy Valley after all, as his agent said, “Any imminent contract signing or agreement (with Penn State) is just off-base.”

Now, there’s another report from USA Today that O’Brien will interview Thursday to possibly become Joe Paterno’s successor.

Titans coach Mike Munchak already has said he’s not interested in becoming a candidate for that job, but 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has interviewed with the school.

O’Brien’s agent, Joe Linta, said O’Brien would want to see what’s available in the NFL coaching circle before thinking about a non-pro job, but with Jeff Fisher taking up so much of the oxygen and with the Patriots potentially headed for a deep playoff run after their first-round bye, now is probably a good time for O’Brien to see what Penn State potentially has to offer him.

According to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora, "the potential to strike a deal is very real."

Report: Bill O'Brien to interview at PSU Thursday

Most reputable coaches would not touch the Penn State job with a ten foot pole. It will not be the head coach they hire now who will be the healing force but the coach to follow him. The fallout for PSU has only just begun. Imagine trying to rebuild a program with all that baggage.

Alot of coaches are best as assistants, why can't the football minds figure that out.

Didn't CBS have O'Brien locked into the job a couple days ago?  It seems they have something different every day: why don't they just shut-up and wait instead of continually making themselves look stupid?

I think whoever they get is going to deal with some serious recruiting challeneges, possible penalties, and live under a microsocope.  In short, this hire is the rebound guy, and whoever their next coach is afdter this one might get a chnace to rebuild.

Why is this guy the frontrunner?  He has the best quarterback in the league with the leading receiver in the NFL with Welker and leading TD receiver with TE Gronkowski.  NE has weapons to work with on offense, which Charlie Weis rode to the head coaching job at Notre Dame.  These OC's from NE are a product of the talent on the field not the talent in the booth.  I think Penn State needs to continue their search and find a more talented up-n-coming coach, not one from the cheating Belichek stable.

Report: Bill O'Brien to interview at PSU Thursday

My sources in Happy valley say that ex-49er head coach Mike Singletary has emerged as the front runner for the vacant head coaching position @ Penn State. The apparent 2nd choice if this nut Singletary declines the offer is current ESPN3 analyst Dan Hawkins; formerly of Boise State and Colorado. When reached for comment, the Hawk was quoted as saying, "Although this Penn State gig is a dead-end job for any fool who takes it, I can make $2.5 mill a year to win 4 games a year and that ain't chump change brother." Penn State spokesperson Jill Paterno would neither confirm or deny these reports, but simply added that the 114-year old icon that is her great, great godfather is doing well and expects to be on the sidelines next football season.
