Greg Manusky was fired by Norv Turner (US Presswire).By Josh Katzowitz

UPDATE: 5:58 p.m. ET - Several outlets are reporting that longtime Chargers defensive assistant John Pagano has been hired as the team's new defensive coordinator.

The Chargers will look for their second defensive coordinator since Jan. 2011. That’s because, as the San Diego Union Tribune reports, San Diego has fired Greg Manusky.

“I’d like to thank Greg for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team and coaching staff this past season,” Turner in a statement released by the team.

Only a season ago, after Ron Rivera left for the Panthers head coaching job (a job in which Manusky actually was one of four finalists), the Chargers hired Manusky to replace him. Before that, Manusky had been the 49ers defensive coordinator, but when Jim Harbaugh was hired, he made it clear Manusky wouldn’t stay in San Francisco.

When it became clear that Norv Turner and San Diego general manager A.J. Smith would be retained by owner Dean Spanos, some kind of change still needed to be made. Manusky -- whose unit finished 16th in the league  in yards allowed -- just became that fall guy.

Of course, this move IS rather interesting, considering this is what Turner said about Manusky THREE days ago.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News
"I would not characterize the hiring of Greg Manusky as a mistake," Turner said, via the North County Times. "He has done a good job for us. Losing so many guys and playing so many young players is difficult.

"Defensively, it's all about having impact players. If you don't have players that can [beat] a guy one-on-one and make a big play, you're not going to get the number of stops you need to get. It's been a hard year for all of us and a tough year for Greg, but I thought he did a good job."

So, if it’s not Manusky’s fault, as Turner flat-out says, but instead, the fault of whomever is in charge of player personnel, it sounds like Manusky got a raw deal. Especially since the general manager in charge of player personnel still has a job.

Manusky wasn't the idiot who drafted Larry English. A.J. did.

Manusky didn't call timeout before losing a challenge. Norv did.

Manusky fired. Norv and A.J. hailed by spineless Spanos as the ones to win a Super Bowl.

Just another playoff-less season in San Diego just as A.J. Smith wanted by forcing 14-2 head coach out.

Greg Manusky is a terrible defensive coordinator (that's two years in a row of getting fired...ouchie!), but don't let that fool you. He will be a great head coach like the hapless Mike McCarthy. He too toiled as an incompetent assistant head coach before the Packers hired him.

Make no mistake about this move either.  Just like keeping the GM and Coach to save 12 Million, the firing of Manusky was a financial decision meant to save money by promoting from within and paying a minimum salary.  They could have gone out and got a top flight DC like Del Rio but the Spanos family chose to save money rather than invest in the product they put on the field.  Just watch another year goes by just like the last thirty with no big name free agent signing.

Norv Turner and AJ Smith have one man to thank, Philip Rivers. Rivers truely showed that he wears the pants in the organization because his insistance that Turner be kept worked. Everyone can blame Norv but did Shottenheimer do any better? What about Bobby Ross? Think about it, how many Super Bowls did Coryell win? We as Charger fans want things way to fast and need to be patient for once. Maybe this will put all the fair weather first quarter booers back in thier holes.

Chiefsforpres you can call me a fool all you like but instead of engaging in personal attacks why not come back with something that tells me exactly WHY Cowher wouldn't be a good HC and WHO would be a better choice.
It's easy to say "that won't work" but offer something of substance to back it up.
Now, I do believe Cowher would be a great choice as coach, he's won a  SB, 2 AFC championships, he's a tough coach who players will run through the proverbial brick wall for, he's a coach who's always had a commitment to the run which I believe is necessary in San Diego if they are to EVER approach the heights they can reach with Rivers as QB.
I also think a coach like Cowher would attract a tremendous staff that would enable the team to be even better, in addition I believe he would attract players who wanted to win and wanted to win a SB because they recognize him as a quality coach who has won.
As for the assertion that he is "old", the man is 53 soon to be 54, he is a "pup" in this day & age, he has a .623 winning % as a HC, add in that the Bolts play in a VERY winnable division, have a franchise QB and just need a couple of extra pieces - starting RB (Not that Tolbert or Matthews are bad choices to have but imagine a rotation of Trent Richardson & matthews with Tolbert as the bruiser for the tough yards) & another WR and you've got the mix for a championship team.
The main thing Cowher would bring is toughness, mental toughness and isn't the wishy washy type like Turner is and I think that toughness is something the Chargers miss and Cowher would have kicked them in the rear to get them going and that mid season losing streak wouldn't have happened.

Yet one more idiot that does not see that Cower is old now he can not coach two more decades to get to another championship. How could someone not win one after taking 17 years to build for one? Cower is a football moron. Ann Coulter could coach a team to a super bowl in less that 2 decades and she does not know anything about football and is a laughable imbecile and a idiot. Only another football moron would think Bill Cower is the answer. What a fool.
