Greg Manusky was fired by Norv Turner (US Presswire).By Josh Katzowitz

UPDATE: 5:58 p.m. ET - Several outlets are reporting that longtime Chargers defensive assistant John Pagano has been hired as the team's new defensive coordinator.

The Chargers will look for their second defensive coordinator since Jan. 2011. That’s because, as the San Diego Union Tribune reports, San Diego has fired Greg Manusky.

“I’d like to thank Greg for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team and coaching staff this past season,” Turner in a statement released by the team.

Only a season ago, after Ron Rivera left for the Panthers head coaching job (a job in which Manusky actually was one of four finalists), the Chargers hired Manusky to replace him. Before that, Manusky had been the 49ers defensive coordinator, but when Jim Harbaugh was hired, he made it clear Manusky wouldn’t stay in San Francisco.

When it became clear that Norv Turner and San Diego general manager A.J. Smith would be retained by owner Dean Spanos, some kind of change still needed to be made. Manusky -- whose unit finished 16th in the league  in yards allowed -- just became that fall guy.

Of course, this move IS rather interesting, considering this is what Turner said about Manusky THREE days ago.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News
"I would not characterize the hiring of Greg Manusky as a mistake," Turner said, via the North County Times. "He has done a good job for us. Losing so many guys and playing so many young players is difficult.

"Defensively, it's all about having impact players. If you don't have players that can [beat] a guy one-on-one and make a big play, you're not going to get the number of stops you need to get. It's been a hard year for all of us and a tough year for Greg, but I thought he did a good job."

So, if it’s not Manusky’s fault, as Turner flat-out says, but instead, the fault of whomever is in charge of player personnel, it sounds like Manusky got a raw deal. Especially since the general manager in charge of player personnel still has a job.

Wow this day is glorifying for me... I am a die hard 49er man, when my niners are out (which is every yr) I root for Cali. Wow my best friend in the world watches every niner game with me for 5 yrs and he is a die hard SD fan. He cringed when you all signed Manusky. We have almost the same D as last yr and he leaves and we are #1. The main thing that made me burn my season tickets last yr was no matter what the distance was on 3rd and Long ie; 3rd 8, 3rd 14, and even worse 3rd 22, Manusky sends all 8 DB's exactly in a retreat as far as the distance plus 5 yds, rushes 3, and watches the offense march down the field. I predicted all this!!!

he is the fall guy becuse the defense was bad. who else is there to blame. you know mr know it all smith is not going to take the blame. if something is bad, the change is made because possibly the next guy can do better. if he doesnt, you havent lost anything. in this age of high pay, one thing you pay for is quick results, no room for friendships or lets give him another chance. those guys paying thousands for luxury boxes demand it.

Sorry but I agree with this move. I couldnt stand to watch three man rushes on third down all year. Never blitz and never hid any of his defenive coverages.

Yep, 100% with you FloridaBoltfan.  His schemes were terrible.  Yes, SD needs some more talent on both sides of the ball, but the coaching was bad too.

Bottom line is this team has been moving backwards for years beginning with giving away Drew Brees in favor of Rivers.

Really?!?  You're kidding, right?  If you were a real fan, you'd know that Brees wasn't all that with San Diego.  Rivers is one of the best QBs in the NFL.  Yes, Brees is now one too, but it only happened because he grew a MASSIVE chip on his shoulder after SD let him go - and has a great system in NO.  The problems with this team have nothing to do with the QB.

So, why in the heck is Norv still around? I'm still waiting for an answer. We have two playoff-missing seasons in a row and Norv is still the coach? I'd rather have Manusky be HC than Norv. Does that say anything?

He wasn't the only problem, but he was a problem. Handing New England a field goal at the end of the first half when they started inside their 30 with 19 seconds left and no time outs was an early indication that he wasn't good. Brady threw 2 straight uncontested 15 yard outs with the CBs lining up 20 yards off the line. And I wonder if Tebow was going to run the ball when he entered that game in Denver for the first time. He scored on a QB draw with the DBs locked up in man coverage and no spy.

The most compelling evidence was that the 49ers became the best defense in the league after he left, and the Chargers went from #1 to not being able to stop teams consistently on the ground or in the air.

As a season ticket holder now with 27 years of seniority, I can only say that the Chargers all along have been preparing to go to L.A. The fan base here in San Diego overwhelmingly wants AJ (The Lord of No Rings) and Norv Turner (no relation to Smeagol) fired. Smith has absolutley no relation with the San Diego press, which really is irrelevant to his ineptitude to assess true NFL talent year-in-and-out. But for a franchise that supoosedly is trying to get a stadium built here in America's finest city, why would Spanos continue to turn his back on his fan base? Think back when the Chargers moved their training camp to Carson nearby the proposed new stadium. That was a message to those in L.A. that he was prepared and ready to move. Basically San Diego....we're screwed!
