Greg Manusky was fired by Norv Turner (US Presswire).By Josh Katzowitz

UPDATE: 5:58 p.m. ET - Several outlets are reporting that longtime Chargers defensive assistant John Pagano has been hired as the team's new defensive coordinator.

The Chargers will look for their second defensive coordinator since Jan. 2011. That’s because, as the San Diego Union Tribune reports, San Diego has fired Greg Manusky.

“I’d like to thank Greg for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to our team and coaching staff this past season,” Turner in a statement released by the team.

Only a season ago, after Ron Rivera left for the Panthers head coaching job (a job in which Manusky actually was one of four finalists), the Chargers hired Manusky to replace him. Before that, Manusky had been the 49ers defensive coordinator, but when Jim Harbaugh was hired, he made it clear Manusky wouldn’t stay in San Francisco.

When it became clear that Norv Turner and San Diego general manager A.J. Smith would be retained by owner Dean Spanos, some kind of change still needed to be made. Manusky -- whose unit finished 16th in the league  in yards allowed -- just became that fall guy.

Of course, this move IS rather interesting, considering this is what Turner said about Manusky THREE days ago.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News
"I would not characterize the hiring of Greg Manusky as a mistake," Turner said, via the North County Times. "He has done a good job for us. Losing so many guys and playing so many young players is difficult.

"Defensively, it's all about having impact players. If you don't have players that can [beat] a guy one-on-one and make a big play, you're not going to get the number of stops you need to get. It's been a hard year for all of us and a tough year for Greg, but I thought he did a good job."

So, if it’s not Manusky’s fault, as Turner flat-out says, but instead, the fault of whomever is in charge of player personnel, it sounds like Manusky got a raw deal. Especially since the general manager in charge of player personnel still has a job.

Manusky's was a lousy, It's not right he gets the total blame Aj Smith is more to blame than anyone else. Spanos should have fired Smith. Spanos has the football knowledge of NFL Soloman so Charger fans will suffer for while. The Chargers need more than a coordinator to help the Defense!!! Hopefully Smith will prove me wrong on him not being fired. I doubt that will happen . Go Boltz next year!!!!!

Fire whomever you want.  Bottom line is this team has been moving backwards for years beginning with giving away Drew Brees in favor of Rivers. Continue with assorted assets on both defense and offense.  #1 issue...Front office mis-management on virtually every player personnel move in the last 5 yearsl. #2 Issue.....Norv Turner is a coordinator at best. He has not been, nor ever will be, head coaching material.  WAKE THE HELL UP SPANOS!!! When will you stop running this franchise into the ground in your best emulation of the Raiders? This continued BS of underperformance and lackluster blaise attitudes and execution from virtually every level from ownership to player makes me want to burn my season tickets and say get the hell out and move to LA already.

What a joke, the defense wasn'tt the problem, alot of it was Rivers and his turnovers which in turn keeps the defense on the field alot longer than they need to be. Special teams still is a joke, why not fire the special teams coach?????? I am still reeling that Turner and Smith still are with the Chargers. :(  Geaux Saints

Sorry but I agree with this move. I couldnt stand to watch three man rushes on third down all year. Never blitz and never hid any of his defenive coverages. It's no wonder they only went .500.
He never should of been hired in the first place, he sucked at San Fran. and it only makes reason that he would suck in San Diego as well.

It was totally Manusky's fault that the Chargers drafted Antoine Cason and Marcus Gilchrist, two of the worst cornerbacks I have ever seen in my life on a play by play basis, and put them both in there to be beat time and time again by teams' second and third WRs. It was also his fault that the Chargers turned the ball over on offense an inordinate amount of times. What a joke.

The Chargers fired the wrong guy.  But AJ, the Lord of no Rings and his yes man Norv (.500) Turner needed a fall guy.  Well, here he is.

Norv Turner is not going to come out and call him garbage. Thats professional and Norv Turner is not going to do that. Josh Katzowitz your are completely wrong. Manusky is an idiot. His play calling was terrible. He is not the fall guy. Tell me a 2 man rush on Aaron Rogers on 3 and 9? He put no pressure on the QB. Do I need to continue?

It is obvious that someone had to be fired to cover up the incompitance of AJ Smith. It wasn't Manusky that drafted those excellant defenders such as Larry English, Antoine Cason, and Luis Castillo. It wasn't Manusky that traded up to select Eric Weddle and then made him the highest paid safety in the game when he might not be in the top 10 safeties impact wise. He has paid Luis Castillo like he was a 15 Sack a year defensive end when he is just a glorified defensive tackle who can't even manage to stay healthy and doesn't make tackles when he is healthy. The defense is ajoke. The 'league leaders' in yards allowed last year was because the special teams gave up so many yards and points that all of the defensive statistics were skewed. Only a wholesale rebuilding of the defense (in conjunction with the firing of AJ) can make this team a contender. Paying old guys like Takeo Spikes and Bob Sanders is not the answer. Dear Dean change your mind. FIRE AJ NOW.
