Josh McDaniels will join New England immediately (US Presswire).

By Josh Katzowitz

With the news that Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien has taken the Penn State head coaching job, we told you Josh McDaniels was scheduled to interview for his old job in New England. The Associated Press has confirmed that not only will McDaniels get that job, beginning in 2012, but he’ll join the team immediately in time for this year’s playoffs.

The story was originally reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McDaniels had a terrible year in his only season as the Rams offensive coordinator -- St. Louis ranked 31st in yards gained and dead last in points scored -- but he had so much success previously in New England that the move makes perfect sense from  a Patriots perspective. O'Brien, meanwhile, will return to New England until the season is finished.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News
Ever since leaving New England, though, McDaniels hasn't had a real good run of success. When he took over the Broncos head coaching job, the team started the year 6-0, but during the rest of the 2009 season and into 2010, Denver lost 17 of 22 games. He was fired 13 games into last season. Then, he took the Rams offensive coordinator job under head coach Steve Spagnuolo, but that offense, through injuries and a unit that had a tough time adjusting to the new scheme, was a disaster.

Now, McDaniels returns to the position he held from 2006-08, when the Patriots never finished lower than 11th in total offense and were the top NFL offense in 2007.

The Patriots are the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and they won't have to play until next Saturday in Foxboro, so McDaniels would have at least a week to reingratiate himself to the team. As CSNNE's Tom E. Curran retweets, McDaniels' offense already has faced the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, Packers and Saints this year, and that would help New England's prep if it has to face those squads in the postseason (out of those teams, the Patriots have played only Pittsburgh this year).

McDaniels returns to a place where others can cover up his flaws. Even though Brady is just an average QB when he's under pressure, unlike Brees, P. Manning and Rodgers, he will make McDaniels look better than he really is. When defenses get in Brady's face and shut down Gronkowski the Pats struggle. NE is not even in the top five teams this year.

I'm glad to see McDaniels come back and I'm not surprised he's already back and has plans to be the Pats OC in 2012. McDaniels is an offensive master mind and needs to stick to what he knows and BB+Tom Brady+McDaniels = good luck to the NFL stopping the Patriots offense next year.

" Some of the comments on here are just really sad. As a Pats fan, I am psyched by this move. And for all you Denver fans, agreed that McDaniels didn't do too many things good for your team, but, hmm, who's that at QB that he drafted? You know, the same QB that took you to the playoffs? Hmm? "

Hmm?  Obviously you haven't watched many games with Tim Tebow at QB.  He's beyond awful.  You'll see tomorrow.  Certainly wasn't worth the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks Josh McIdiot used to move up into the first round to draft Tebow.  And the Broncos not only got Tebow but also the fanatical cult of Floridians and evangelicals that worship every thing he does.

Didn't know how despised McDaniels is in Denver and in the Rocky Mountains?   Well you have only a little taste of it on this forum - the little McNapoleon Belicheat wannabe is less popular than a steaming pile of cow dung in this part of the country.  95% or more Broncos fans absolutely hate what McDaniels did to the team.  That's reality, pal.

Course the patriots want this guy back.  Didn't he try to take some of the cheating methods to denver and get caught?   Figures the patriots want to keep all of their "talent" cheating talent together.

Josh McDaniels is simply stated the mosted hated man alive by the vast majority of Broncos fans.  He destroyed the excellent offense he was given by trading Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, and Peyton Hillis for spit,, made some of the worst draft picks and draft day trades ever, and stuck - yes STUCK - the Broncos with Tim Tebow and all the huge amount of excess baggage Tebow carries.  McDaniels left Denver in disgrace then went on to the St. Louis Rams where he managed to make an up and coming team into the worst offense in the NFL.  I've compared McDaniels to a Manchurian Candidate or a Trojan Horse sent purposively out from Boston by his daddy Belicheat to ruin the one franchise that has had the Patriots number. Little hoodie McDaniels succeeded in neutering the Denver Broncos and gave the Big Hoodie a bonus by also taking out the Rams.  Now he can go home and feel proud of how he made the Patriots have a better chance for years to come.  There's a special seat in the Hot House Down Below for this little weasal when his time is up...
