Romeo Crennel did nice work as the interim coach for the Chiefs in 2011, going 2-1 over the three games he coached, including a shocking upset of the (at the time) undefeated Packers, a near win against the Raiders in overtime and a victory over the eventual division-champion Broncos in Week 17.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

And now he's reportedly been given the full-time nod as head coach of the Chiefs, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that the Chiefs are "planning to retain Romeo Crennel and remove interim tag from his title."

The Chiefs recently interviewed ex-Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, but it's not hard to see how they zeroed in on locking down Crennel. Jeff Fisher is going to either Miami or St. Louis (and has said as much), Josh McDaniels is already in New England, Kirk Ferentz is staying at Iowa and that leaves Crennel as an obvious choice to keep running the Chiefs.

Additionally, his defense over the final eight weeks of the season was incredibly impressive. The Chiefs allowed just two opponents -- the Patriots and then the Jets, the latter being the game that got Todd Haley fired -- to score more than 20 points in that stretch, and Crennel's gameplans against high-powered offenses, particularly while handicapped by the Tyler Palko era, was quite impressive.

He's a locker room favorite in Kansas City, and if he can bring in a capable offensive coordinator and avoid the injuries that plagued Kansas City in 2010, there's a reasonable chance that the Chiefs could return to the top of the AFC West next season.

I remember that, too!

The difference is that John Mackovic took the Chiefs to the playoffs. The players revolted against Mackovic and Lamar Hunt fired him and that stands as the textbook example of why you do not let the inmates run the asylum.

Frank Ganz was a special teams coach. He had never been a head coach. Todd Haley had never been a head coach and had never played the game at any level. Yeah, that was going to work.

We now know that the Chiefs-- even with all of the injuries-- had enough talent to make the playoffs. Haley didn't think so and  the crap he was pulling was to spite Pioli and the Chief's fans.

Report: Romeo Crennel will be next Chiefs coach

One thing the AFC West doesn't have is defense in their division.  Crennel is a great defensive coach and with him at the helm they don't have to change much.  Remember the only reason the Chiefs regressed was because of injuries to key players.  If Charles is healthy all year we probably wouldn't be talking about a coaching change.  Since the Chiefs are the West Coast Patriots Crennel is the perfect fit for this organization.  They are familier with each other and will surprise people next year.  Don't forget the Chiefs are a good defensive team when healthy.Cool

I'm glad they are keeping him!   I did hear they were talking about DelRio Yell  Thank god they didn't take that route & kept Crennel

Report: Romeo Crennel will be next Chiefs coach

Seriously this is the best KC could do. I guess all the good coaches did not want to take on this losing franchise. He will be there about three years and they will realize he's a loser as a head coach.

Report: Romeo Crennel will be next Chiefs coach

Belichick flamed out in Cleveland before taking the Patriots to greatness, it's worth noting; that town's a deathtrap.  I'm not 100% sure Crennel's great HC material, but the man can coach defense well enough, and I think he deserves another shot.

I'm a fan of Crennel and glad to see him get another shot. He did a decent job in Cleveland, leading them to ten wins was no small feat. I don't think it is a coincidence that the Pats haven't won a ring since Crennel and Weis left and no coincidence the Chiefs made the playoffs in 2010 with both of them there. As a matter of fact neither Parcells or Belichick has won a ring without Crennel on the staff, he's got five rings.

Report: Romeo Crennel will be next Chiefs coach

Romeo Crennel is the answer that the lowly Kansas City Chiefs need as there next HC, really. Crennel did nothing when he was with the Cleveland Browns except for one so-called good year that was a 10-6 record & still they did not make it to the playoffs. And please Chiefs fans don't bring up that Crennel failed only because he was stick with the Browns because really Chiefs fans the Browns are exactly like your Chiefs a losing franchise so please stop it you fools. You Chiefs fans were saying once they the Chiefs fired Todd Haley that you guys will get a top name coach but it will never be Crennel & now when you guys been screwed by the Chiefs front office once again you guys are trying to sell to the world that Crennel is the greatest coach in the world, idiots. Crennel will bring down the Chiefs even more if you can take the Chiefs down even more. You Chiefs fans will be crying for Haley to come back because at least Haley know what he was doing compared to Crennel any day.
