Romeo Crennel did nice work as the interim coach for the Chiefs in 2011, going 2-1 over the three games he coached, including a shocking upset of the (at the time) undefeated Packers, a near win against the Raiders in overtime and a victory over the eventual division-champion Broncos in Week 17.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

And now he's reportedly been given the full-time nod as head coach of the Chiefs, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that the Chiefs are "planning to retain Romeo Crennel and remove interim tag from his title."

The Chiefs recently interviewed ex-Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, but it's not hard to see how they zeroed in on locking down Crennel. Jeff Fisher is going to either Miami or St. Louis (and has said as much), Josh McDaniels is already in New England, Kirk Ferentz is staying at Iowa and that leaves Crennel as an obvious choice to keep running the Chiefs.

Additionally, his defense over the final eight weeks of the season was incredibly impressive. The Chiefs allowed just two opponents -- the Patriots and then the Jets, the latter being the game that got Todd Haley fired -- to score more than 20 points in that stretch, and Crennel's gameplans against high-powered offenses, particularly while handicapped by the Tyler Palko era, was quite impressive.

He's a locker room favorite in Kansas City, and if he can bring in a capable offensive coordinator and avoid the injuries that plagued Kansas City in 2010, there's a reasonable chance that the Chiefs could return to the top of the AFC West next season.

We do not need or want Matt Flynn (Cassell), we already have Matt Cassell (Flynn), we dont need another Matt (Flynn)Cassell.
Your Matt Flynn does not resemble our Earth Matt Flynn.

He's a locker room favorite in Kansas City
I am old enough to remember when Kansas City in 1987 hired another locker room favorite.....Frank Ganz. I hope this works out differently.

We do not need or want Matt Flynn (Cassell), we already have Matt Cassell (Flynn), we dont need another Matt (Flynn)Cassell. I could care less about Philbin, its not his offense and he does not call the plays so I never had any excitement about that. Jack Del Rio pfft... so far Romeo is the best, which aint saying much but looks like Egoli got his man.

Good for Romeo, lets hope he hires Al Saunders back. Let's hope we can package up some players and move up in the draft ahead of Miami and select Griffin III. If that can't be done lets hope that Ricky Stanzi is the shit. If he isn't and we dont get a franchise type player at Qb it wont make much difference who the coach is.

File this under seeing it a mile away.  A Non-story to us Chiefs fans I mean 1) no one else can work with that mega-egomaniac Pioli 2) Pioli was lazy and didn't really go after anyone Philbin, Del Rio, McDaniels...really??  How stupid do ou think we are at least with the Chiefs being subpar next year it wil cost Pioli and ultimately Crennel their jobs this had to be a job saving selection for Pioli and he failed and he will be fired by the end of the 2012 season for yet another lack luster and embarrassing performance and then maybe we can get a real coach and gm or a real coach/gm in here.

Defense was good under Romeo, but don't forget HOF'er Emmitt Thomas either. The only guy I'd prefer is Cowher, but that would be a virtual impossibility with Pioli & Bill having a power struggle. Cowher would be great for a young defense, but I doubt if Hunt would throw that much $$$ at him anyway. Remember, he was LB's coach under Marty before the Steelers called. And I don't look for them to offer Orton a contract either, they're too damn tight...in fact they're tighter n' a lug nut on a rusty pickup. But the O line & QB situations are major problems. What they need is a franchise QB!, that's a true pocket passer.

Butch Davis got them to the playoffs, not Romeo Crennel. The Browns missed the playoffs in 07.  This is not a knock on Romeo, just a factual correction.  Personally, I think Romeo is a good coach providing he doesn't have to deal with douches like Braylon and Winlow.

I think its a great move.  Everyone forgets that Crennel was the only coach to get the browns to the playoffs.  If you can coach the Browns to the playoffs you deserve another chance at coaching.  I think he should do it like Rex does.  Hire a DC who you have mentored and call the D on game day.  Hire a good OC and QB coach and make sure they believe in your way of running an offense.

It'll be interesting to see who Crennel picks as DC. Yes the defense was great the latter part of the year, but who can KC hire to carry forward with Crennel's defensive pholosophy? IMO, he shouldn't try the Haley method of being a Head Coach and Coordinator. Maybe the Chiefs already have a good replcement for DC alredy on staff? The OC and DC coach selections Crennel makes will be interesting.

KLM they interviewed Jack Del Rio, last time I checked he was white. Stop bringing race into everything, you sound like an idiot.
