Romeo Crennel did nice work as the interim coach for the Chiefs in 2011, going 2-1 over the three games he coached, including a shocking upset of the (at the time) undefeated Packers, a near win against the Raiders in overtime and a victory over the eventual division-champion Broncos in Week 17.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

And now he's reportedly been given the full-time nod as head coach of the Chiefs, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that the Chiefs are "planning to retain Romeo Crennel and remove interim tag from his title."

The Chiefs recently interviewed ex-Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, but it's not hard to see how they zeroed in on locking down Crennel. Jeff Fisher is going to either Miami or St. Louis (and has said as much), Josh McDaniels is already in New England, Kirk Ferentz is staying at Iowa and that leaves Crennel as an obvious choice to keep running the Chiefs.

Additionally, his defense over the final eight weeks of the season was incredibly impressive. The Chiefs allowed just two opponents -- the Patriots and then the Jets, the latter being the game that got Todd Haley fired -- to score more than 20 points in that stretch, and Crennel's gameplans against high-powered offenses, particularly while handicapped by the Tyler Palko era, was quite impressive.

He's a locker room favorite in Kansas City, and if he can bring in a capable offensive coordinator and avoid the injuries that plagued Kansas City in 2010, there's a reasonable chance that the Chiefs could return to the top of the AFC West next season.

Even Bill Belichick couldn't win in Cleveland so why all the hate for Crennel. The guy is not arrogant unlike Charlie Weis. Chances are Crennel will lead the Chiefs to multiple playoff berths whereas Weis will still struggle as a coach...at Kansas State...no less.

Good move for the Chiefs. I know he wasn't able to get anything done in Cleveland, but that shouldn't be held against him as Celveland hasn't been relevent for as long as I've been alive. Nobody has been able to do anything with Cleveland, so it's not his fault. Chiefs are a better team, and he'll get his pieces back next year in Cassel, Charles, and his defensive players. Chiefs are still playoff contenders in that division.

really good hire, will be a great hire if the Chiefs can somehow get McDaniels who Cassel looked great under, but good hire for the defense which really has been good even without their best safety.

Brian Billick would be interesting as the OC. But I hear he likes his cushy TV job. It will all pan out after the season which I hope the Chiefs will beef up the offensive line and wide reciever positions.

Also, as much as I like RAC, I question whether he is the best move.  Need a strong offensive mind in the game these days, and I don't know if you can persuade a strong offensive mind with an OC position, as opposed to a play-calling HC position.

In addition, his niceness with the players could be a detriment.  Is noone looking at how undisciplined the team was against Oakland AT HOME?  That was a HUGE red flag to me.  They weren't beat by Oakland, they beat themselves.  Haley may have been overkill on the "yell at you" leadership style, but RAC may be overkill on the "nice guy" leadership style.

Time will tell.

The OC will be key.  If its McDaniels its a big loss.  McDaniels was the only person on the Rams coaching staff to be retained after Spag and crew were fired.  Seems to me like the front office wants to keep him to help develop Bradford.  Might be a requirement for the new HC there.
