Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Really crappy that the Colts have the #1 pick after all of the success they've had over the past decade +

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

According to Tony Dungy, the Colts should draft Robert Griffin the III, because he is black and therefor is much better than Andrew Luck.  Those are Tony Dungy's words, not mine.  Just remember people Tony Dungy is black, so he can't be a racist.  Also Mr. Dungy before trying to use mobility as your reason for being racist, Andrew Luck has averaged 2 and 3 yards more per rush in the last 2 seasons than Robert Griffin III, which is pretty impressive because Robert Griffin III is a great QB.

I know Robert Griffin III wouldn't do it, but he should do himself a favor and ask Tony Dungy not to speak for him anymore as it will only hurt his draft stock and reputation.

The Colts cannot trade Manning. For one, he is not under contract (officially). Two, what team would trade for a QB with 3 neck surgeries and a $28 million cap hit in one year? The Colts must sign him to trade him and they cannot trade a $28 million dollar contract. They will either keep Manning and draft Luck or let Manning go and draft Luck. As a Colts fan, I hate to see Manning go but I want the Colts to be relevant in 2012 and in years to come. Luck offers the best option and hopefully Manning can play. He will forever be the best Indianapolis Colt and without him the franchise would be in LA.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Oh and picking Luck is the biggest no brainer in the last 10 drafts. Lastly for the idiot suggesting Andrew Luck could turn out to be another Ryan Leaf... nice try Ryan... we all know it's you!

You guys suggesting Peyton Manning is simply going to walk away are insane. Second I believe Irsay listens to the doctors and if they tell him Peyton is "good to go" then he'll simply pay Peyton the $28m and play him in 2012 with Luck having the benefit of watching and learning behind a future first ballot Hall of Famer. Third, if the rest of the league sees that Manning can in fact play then the Colts are in the best of all possible positions because they then get  to entertain "who will pay what" for him in 2012. Bet your butt if he can play there are plenty of teams that will give up a #1and #2 in a herabeat for Manning.
Not matter what however... the Colts are in the Catbird seat and looking pretty after a disastrous 2011!

The difference beteen Luck & Leaf is all upstairs, Leaf was strictly an athlete, not a lot going on upstairs.
Luck is a student AND an athlete, he's attended Stanford as an architectural design & engineering student and has graduated with a high GPA that isn't easy to do.
He's a smart kid, he knows he has much more going on besides football, he's also a student of the game, the same couldn't be said of Leaf, add in that Leaf had Kevin Gilbride as a HC for half a season, then June Jones then Mike Riley in his time as QB in San Diego all of which were NOT guys who were successful HC's in the NFL so they couldn't prepare him properly.
The Chargers also threw him into the fire right away and had HUGE expectations even more so than you would normally have for a first round pick.
If Leaf had a strong HC and a great OC - Norv Turner would have been a great mentor, heck Troy Aikman credits Turner for making him "Troy Aikman HOF QB" and truth be told Turner is a better OC than HC but a guy like that would have made a HUGE difference for Leaf.
Everyone talks about how great RG3 is but who's to say he isn't the next Quincy Carter? or Bert Emanuel or any other "athletic QB" we've seen burst into the NFL with so much praise.
Fact is drafting is an inexact science but you CAN improve the chances of success for a guy by surrounding him with a great organization & coaches to get the most out of him.
I won't sya either Luck or Griffin will be stars in the league but I'm sure hoping both of them end up being so because this game begins and ends on great QB play, you can have great defenses but in the end fans want to see guys like Manning,Brady, & Brees do their magic every Sunday.
Luck & Leaf may both have 4 lettered last names but that's where the similarities end and a player with the physical tools and smarts of Andrew Luck will be successful in the NFL and this notion that he could be like Leaf will be laughed off.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Luck should be NFL ready next year and man we've never seen how such misfortune in losing a player for a year could turn into fortune for a team. Never has there been or will ever be an example of getting this lucky as a result of an injury.
It happened in the NBA to the Spurs. David Robinson was hurt for the season which resulted in the Spurs going from a playoff team to the worst team in the league. The Spurs got the first overall pick and drafted Tim Duncan which created "The Twin Towers".

The strategy is too get every team that needs a QB to make a deal for Manning. Peyton will be in Arizona by April
