Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

That would be both!  Nobody would expect that and you could get alot of young talent for that move.

This is a team that is rebuilding. With that said, you've got to take the best QB prospect in the last 10 years if he's available. Plus, they will get atleast an additional 2nd round pick from someone for Payton Manning. If the new General Manager is comparable, he will use the draft as well as free agency to help this team be atleast 7-9 or 8-8 this coming season. Indianapolis is doing things right; provided they get a good General Manager.

Aging defense, a line that can't run block, losing Wayne and no decent backup QB. Trade out of the first pick, acquire as many decent picks in  as you can, trade Manning for as many picks as you can get out of him and start rebuilding this team just like the Cowboys did when they traded Walker to the Vikings for a ton of picks. They sucked for 2 years and then became a HOF team. Andrew Luck isn't going to help your defense or line at this point.

Awesome post man, I never even considered that but honestly, that's brilliant thinking to say the least.  I've always looked at it as who should they keep, Manning or Luck?  In my other post I mentioned how I've been reading it'll be Manning being traded, but the Colts trading both Luck and Manning would be an unbelieavable move because you're right, they would acquire so much in return and build their team the right way, through the draft.

I've read in MANY places that Luck, because he is such a huge find with so much hype and a rookie salary cap in place would probably fetch as many as 3 first round picks and 2 second round picks as well.  Just insane if that's true.  But imagine trading Luck for 3 first round picks, a couple second round picks and then trading Manning to a sucker out there for a couple firsts and a couple seconds as well.  The Colts could end up with something like 5 first rounders and 4 second round picks for those 2 guys.   That would mean for the next 2 drafts the Colts could ultimately have 3 first round picks in each season, as well as 3 second round picks for the next 2 years as well.  That's SIX players in the first 2 rounds alone counting their own picks.  And then the third year they could have 2 firsts again...

Anybody that thinks I'm crazy and the Colts couldn't get all of the above for those guys think again.  The Raiders just gave up a 1st and a 2nd round pick for Carson Palmer for God sakes....

You will never see a owner dumb enough to make a trade again, like the Vikings did for Walker.....that was a lesson learned by everyone in the NFL.  Vikings got Walker and the Cowboys got 3 Super Bowl rings out of that deal.

what no one but the team and manning really know how bad off manning is. it seems cool, following the macho dog and play hurt. manning could live another 50 years, has enough money to live the life he wants. why jeopardize that for a few seasons?

I'm not yet sold on Luck, but I do agree this would be a smart move for Indy. However, I don't think the Colts will keep both on the roster, considering the huge bonus Manning is due in March. I suspect that if They indeed draft luck, Manning will be gone before the draft.

I would have traded the pick and taken another top QB with the trade, along with all the other pieces they could have done, like the Herschel Walker trade, they could have filled many holes and had Manning groom another top QB prospect. Bad move, sorry.
