Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

FNAS ....... Are you an idiot?????  The Cowboys trade 3 stars for a QB that is 1 hit from being paralized??? The Colts will keep Manning or he will retire, NO TEAM IN THE NFL WILL TRADE TO GET A QB THEY WILL BE PAYING ALLMOST 20 MILLION A YEAR FOR THE NEXT 6 YEARS.

First of all let's get something straight here, Peyton Manning isn't do 20 million per season for the next 6 years.  Under his current agreement and including the March roster bonus for next season Manning is due a total of 35 million dollars.  For the next 3 years after that it's 8.4, 9.4 and 10.4 million dollars respectively.  The total Manning is owed for the next 4 seasons is about 63 million dollars. His latest contract was a 5 year 90 million dollar deal.  Manning was already paid 26.4 million dollars this year by the Colts the team trading for him doesn't have to worry about.

Second of all there is already a story on rotoworld.com talking about how Manning and the Colts may have already agreed and/or might be willing to move back the March 8th roster bonus 28 million dollar deadline.  That deadline is 5 days before player movement can occur, so this would be done so the Colts can explore trade opportunities for Manning.  And believe me, there will be PLENTY of teams BEGGING Indy for Manning.  As long as he's healthy and passes required tests and physicals to prove he's healthy, there will be some pretty wild offers coming in for Peyton from around the league.

And trust me, you're wrong about the "one hit away from being paralyzed" thing too.  Peyton Manning is as wealthy as they come, he's an intelligent guy that has won it all and made more money then he'll ever need in his life.  No chance in hell he would agree to play football if the risk is that high.

This is a great move by Indi, no doubt about it.  Trade Manning who only has a maximum of 4 years left on his contract for a massive package of players and/or draft picks and let Andrew Luck take over the reigns in Indianapolis.  Brilliant move by Indi if this happens.......

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Aging defense, a line that can't run block, losing Wayne and no decent backup QB. Trade out of the first pick, acquire as many decent picks in return as you can, trade Manning for as many picks as you can get out of him and start rebuilding this team just like the Cowboys did when they traded Walker to the Vikings for a ton of picks. They sucked for 2 years and then became a HOF team. Andrew Luck isn't going to help your defense or line at this point.

I agree this might be smoke and mirrors.  But why is Irsay shooting himself in the foot with trying to hire a new GM and having belief in his 26 million dollar current QB?  Lots of important decisions are going on around the league with teams without their new GM in place yet.  I dont argue with picking Luck #1, but why even talk or show your hand.....makes no sense!

This is called smoke and mirrors people. The colts are not going to reveal there plans for the draft 4 months before the thing actually happens. I'm sure they are interested and could draft him but they are not going to make that decision public until late April.

I would definitely take this with a pinch of salt. Personally I think Jim Irsay is playing a game. If he can convince the rest of the NFL that he really wants to take Luck, they will be more likely to offer that little bit more for the pick. What else would he do...tell everyone he doesn't want the pick? Irsay is a smart guy and he will definitely want to keep his options open for draft day.

As long as he's healthy, Peyton stays and plays. If he's not healthy, he won't play for anyone just as he didn't play this year.  If this is the case, maybe Petyon can take over as GM???

I said if healthy but thanks for making the rest of us Texans look bad by showing just how bad the Texas educational system is by not being able to read. Ever player is one hit away and Manning is not going to play if it is that bad.

I'm sure he is not going to have many problems doing a commercial, the guy only gratuated from Stanford in three years. He also will not buy 20 cars and go to strip clubs and "make it rain"with his crew. I'm pretty sure this guy will be fine.

If Isray only knows what we know, that Peyton is uncertain to fully recover, then he knows that he needs a plan B.
