Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

The Colts are thinking about another great 10 year stretch with a Super Bowl winner in Andrew Luck.  If Manning is healthy I would have no problem sitting Luck for a year or two because what he can learn from Manning will make him a Pro Bowl QB for years to come barring injuries.  Great long term planning.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Gotta figure the only reason the Colts take Luck is because they know something about Manning's health that the rest of the football world doesn't.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

I am not a Colt or Cowboy fan so I don't have a dog in this hunt.  A trade that fits perfect for both teams, if Manning is healthy is to trade Manning to the Cowboys for Romo, Felix Jones and Miles Austin. The Cowboys then sign Jeff Saturday off free agent. Colts need a QB to keep the seat hot while Luck gets spun up. Shouldn't take him more that a year and if Romo falters, could even get Luck in earlier. Either way. Don't get me wrong, I think Romo is a top 10 maybe 6 QB in the NFL. His stats speak for themselves but if he doesn't win in Dallas next year he is gone anyway.

Manning stepping in to Dallas will energize the fan base and his tallent and knowledge will take a lot of pressure off of Garrett. Take it a step further and if Caldwell gets fired, Dallas can sign him as OC. Dallas still has to rebuild the secondary but with this move could pretty much not even worry about the offense.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

If they draft Luck, followed by cutting Peyton, it's a huge gamble.  What if Luck is the next David Carr?   This team will be stuck in mediocrity for years.  What about Keeping Peyton, only if rigorous testing shows his neck is fine, trading down to let somebody else put the success of their franchise on a rookie who may or my not ever pan out, and get some extra talent on the O-line and defense.  If Peyton is 100% healthy, he's still a 1 man wrecking crew offensively.   The Colts need to learn that Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Matt Schaub,  Tom Brady, and Drew Brees were not even taken in the top 10 picks, and use some skill to find a QB that will be ready to replace Peyton in a couple years.  Otherwise, you have to blow this team up and hope Luck is what you want him to be.

Another idea... Take Blackmon with the #1 pick overall, and find other ways to shore up the defense, and offensive line.

Luck might throw well..BUT has anyone heard this guy talk ? Good Luck with the commercial endorsements...LOL
I recently heard an audio comparison between Luck and Andre the Giant and they sound strikingly similar. I think he'll do fine with the promos since Peyton Manning speaks and looks even more goofy. I just wish Luck would spruce up the creepy neck beard.

If I were the New York Jets I would make a play for Peyton Manning.  With Mark Sanchez they aren't going to win it all.  With Peyton they might.

Okay, Colt fan, separate yourself from business and fan-dom.  You've got a lot of miles on that Mercedes and it's time for a new car.  No team in their right mind would want to fork over 28m in early March for damaged goods.  Plus, how many Peyton-like years can you really expect now?  Say your thank yous and move on with your football life.  Peyton will wind up with a C- team (Washington, Cleveland, Miami) and play out his last years in futility.  You've ridden this pony long enough.  He's a sure-fire HOF'er, an ambassador to the game and to Indy.  Keep those memories fresh.
