Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

If the Colt's organization respects Manning, they should release him so he can play for whomever he wants. Trading him to a "dog" is not a fair way to end his HOF career.

No brainer. They have to take Luck first or trade the pick for a king's randsom. In the first round, you have to take the best available player. Remember, Denver didn't need a RB when they took TEBOW, but they took him anyway. Best player available has to be the plan for Indy too.

"With the fact that Manning is on the Brown side"

With the fact that Manning is on the Brown side of his playing career
If that means he's going to be traded to the Browns, Peyton ought to retire. Or sell hotdogs.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

We'll know exactly what the Colts will do with Manning in March. As for Luck you would be a fool not to take Luck. With the fact that Manning is on the Brown side of his playing career they better get the hier apparent to Manning. Luck is a can't miss qb and no doubt #1 pick and wether he starts or sits depends on what they do with Manning. Do you want to go forward with the Payon Manning system or throw Luck into the fire and let him learn on the fly. The past few years have shown that with the strict defensive rules in place qb's are throwing balls all over the place. Young qb's have come in and started right away and had success because of having veterans on the team except for Dalton this year. Luck will be a Colt whether Manning is there or not.
"...no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered."

BTW Mr. Katzowitz, don't you have any copy editors? This should read as follows:

"...no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polians, that decision will not be altered."

It's interesting that you conclude this report by qualifying the reported decision, saying "Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick..." Are you perhaps hedging your bets a bit, wondering if this may be a ploy to perhaps deal away the shot at Luck to another team. I have no answers, as I have no answers regarding whether it is better to start highly prized draft picks or have them work through the system slowly. It's definitely a case by case thing. I go back as far as the really early Dallas Cowboys, when Don Meredith was drafted and had to struggle through all the bad years to get to the winning side of life. The one thing we can say for sure without qualification is that the Colts are definitely looking beyond the Manning era. &

Well, considering Manning was the once in every 15 year QB in the same draft as Leaf, I would think you need to update your list.

they aren't even going to enterain the idea of RG3? If he decides to declare for the draft.........hmmmmm I'm not so sure Luck is gonna live up to the hype. My personal fave is RG3!
