Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

Picking Luck is a no-brainer.  The Colts let their choice be known this early for two reasons:
  1. There is no other logical option; a QB of his stature comes around only once every 15 years or so.  They got picks and players for Elway - what good did that do for them?
  2. It will allow them to begin making the p.r. moves needed to put this past season behind them.  Now that we know they'll pick Luck, they can begin to make good with Manning.  The sooner they do that the better.  Peyton is a very smart man; he knows that the franchise will do what's best in their best long term interest.  I do not expect him to pout or become a distraction in any sense.
They will be prudent and will probably take calls on trading Manning, but with his contract it is going to be extremely difficult to move him.  They'll keep this very close-to-the vest, I'm sure.  But they owe it to themselves to find out if some team is willing to make an overwhelming offer.

We've lost sight over the past few seasons that very few rookies QB's perform well if they're thrown into the fire immediately.  John Elway, Peyton Manning, and Troy Aikman are good examples of rookie starters that struggled mightily.  Alex Smith has had other mitigating factors, but being a rookie starter came very close to ruining his career.  Aaron Rogers is playing so well that it's making people forget that he did not play at all early in his career; obviously holding the clipboard for a future HoF'er did not derail his career.  Every rookie QB would be better off learning the nuances of the game on a controlled pace.  Luck will have the great luxury of learning from one of the greatest ever.

There's an interesting side note about this pick.  Arguably, the best examples of the once-every-fifteen-years QB's are John Elway, Peyton Manning, and Andrew Luck.  The Colts franchise will have selected all three of them.  Perhaps that horseshoe on their helmet really is a good luck charm.

Peyton stays. He will re-work his contract, play 2-3 more years while mentoring the Golden Child. Aaron Rogers sat for a long time......probably too long. I don't hear any CheeseDicks complaining now! Colts will be back, strong and long. Houston, enjoy your short run!

Huge respect for GpPokes! I am an Indianpolis native and huge Colts fan. Very nice write-up. I could not agree more. Caldwell is a shitty coach. There is just nothing there on the sidelines! He is the next to go. I think Irsay knows he has a great team and winning two games while losing one player is not to be tolerated. NFL means Not For Long if one cannot produce wins. Here's to many years of classic Colts-Patriots games!

Luck should play behind Manning for a year or two! Its better for Luck AND the franchise. Throwing him in now could ruin him. Like Tim Couch, Akili Smith, etc... etc... Plus, what better teacher than Peyton. Dont get me wrong. If they want to dump Peyton, We"ll take him! (Dolphins) I just dont see it happening. forget the media hype!

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

As a Colts fan I both excited and worried about this. Just like every other true fan I nearly cried when Marshall Faulk was allowed to leave as a free agent in 1998 but happy we got Peyton to compliment our then 2nd year reciever Marvin Harrison. The two of them turned the team around. Peyton is a top notch player in both terms of production and class. He is a great role model and leader for younger players. Drafting Andrew Luck will definatly mark the end of the Peyton Manning era. With that much money tied up in one position on the field it is inevitable that peyton has less than 12 months left of wearing "True Blue". Seeing Peyton in any other uniform is going to hurt alot!
