Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

IrsayBy Josh Katzowitz

With Colts owner Jim Irsay currently looking for a general manager to replace Chris Polian, who was fired along with his father Bill last week, he won’t have to ask anybody he interviews how they’d handle the 2012 No. 1 draft pick. That’s because he already knows what he wants, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

As has long been suspected, the Colts reportedly will choose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck in April, and no matter who’s brought in to take over for the Polian’s, that decision will not be altered.

Some wondered if the reason Bill Polian was fired in the first place was because he and Peyton Manning weren’t getting along -- Irsay is an unabashed fan of his quarterback and thinks of him as family. Polian said the rumors of a rift were untrue.

"He was the first person into the office after it happened," Polian told the Associated Press on Wednesdasy. "There's no rift at all. None.

Now, though, the big questions continue to be what the Colts actually will do about Manning, who’s due a $28 million bonus in March. Would Manning want to play with Luck? Will Manning's neck be healthy? Would the Colts ship Manning somewhere else to give Luck the chance to play immediately?

Now that we seemingly know who the Colts will take with the No. 1 pick, we might have to wait a few more months before the rest of those other questions can be answered.

Trade Peyton -- if he still wants to play.  He should retire.

Report: Colts will take Andrew Luck with top pick

I wonder how much longer Jim Caldwell will have a job - my guess is until a GM is hired and then they will can him.  If they do can Caldwell I agree with the decision because nobody has done less with more this past season.  The Colts lose one player and the wheels came off the bus?  When Tom Brady was knocked out of football during the 2008 season the team barely missed a beat playing with their back-up.  While the Patriots failed to make the playoffs they still posted an 11-5 record and would have made the playoffs if Miami had not done so well that season under Sporano (really his only good season in Miami).  Yes, Peyton Manning is a superstar and you cannot replace him; however you should be able to continue playing quality football without him or at least post more than two wins.  The Colts were the laughing-stock of the NFL this season and very narrowly missed having a winless season.  I blame the Polians for the lack of depth on the team and they were terminated by a smart owner in Jim Irsay.  I have been decidedly unimpressed with Jim Caldwell since the day he took over for Tony Dungi and he has failed to adapt his game plans to his available talent and I therefore think that he should also be terminated.  The Colts without Peyton Manning are better than a team that posts a 2-14 record.  I don't know how you can keep your job when you are given the keys to a Ferrari and at the end of the season you return a Yugo.
The next coach of the Colts should be an offensive mind who is good at mentoring rookie players and who is also good working with established professionals.  Andrew Luck is coming to Indianapolis and the whole "suck for luck" thing seems to have worked out as Luck is undoubtedly going to be wearing white and blue next year.  Manning needs to restructure his contract or he is gone because if he receives his roster bonus after the season is over he will account for 1/3 of the available cap space which is unfair to the other Indianapolis players and the fans.  If Manning is not willing to restructure it will be clear that he wants to move on to another team to finish his career.  I don't think that Irsay will allow Manning to play for another team unless Manning is dead-set on leaving.  Manning can still make a TON of money playing for the Colts for the next two years while he mentors his replacement.  All of this is assuming that Manning CAN and DOES play football again.  I think that Manning's injury is more significant than initially reported as he did not return to the field this season whatsoever and his rehabilitation is just now starting.
So - as a Patriots fan I say to the Colts "Get Well Soon" because I want to face you on the field and I don't want the game to be one-sided.  The Colts-Patriots rivalry is among one of the very best in football and it was a joke this season.  I know you Indy fans have nothing to do with this and I feel your pain.  So, hopefully the team hires a good GM, good coach, restructures Manning's contract, and returns to "normal" some time very soon and I hope that it is before Manning hangs up the cleats because I want to face him again!  Football needs the Patriots and Colts to be good teams at the same time!!

This is a smart move for the Colts.  They have Peyton manning...which is injured we alll know but still he can play when he returns and IF he can't Andrew Luck will fit right in.  Also the Colts can only get better by getting Luck and trading him away...Smart move on their part to get him.

Manning will have 3months of rehab behind him by the time of the draft. Plenty of time. Even if they don't really want to draft Luck, they need others to think they do. Best case scenario, they trade Luck for a ton of high draft picks, and Peyton returns to form next year. Luck is a media darling, not a sure thing. Peyton Manning is a proven stud, Luck is potentially one.

The Colts will have all their money in 2 people @ the same position and nothing in the other 51 players. They will suck as long as they have both.

RG3 better than Luck?  Seriously?  There is only one Cam, take it easy on the comparisons between RG3 and Cam...
