Is Hue Jackson in danger of getting fired?

JacksonBy Josh Katzowitz

With the Raiders hiring former Packers director of football operations Reggie McKenzie as their new general manager, one has to wonder what, if anything, that means for coach Hue Jackson.

Yes, Jackson has only been in Oakland for one season and nearly made the playoffs (he was Tebowed out of the postseason), but according to Pro Football Talk, there’s a clause in his contract that gives McKenzie the right to fire Jackson.

As Mike Florio writes, “It’s believed that Jackson has damaged his stock in Oakland via statements[*] made in the wake of Sunday’s home loss to the Chargers, which caused the Raiders to miss the postseason for the ninth straight year.  To stay, Jackson will have to submit to the new structure and accept the fact that his influence as to football matters necessarily will diminish.”

*Here’s what Jackson said after the Raiders lost last Saturday to eliminate themselves from the postseason: "I'm pissed at my team. At some point in time as a group of men you go in the game and you can say whatever you want about coaches, you win the game. Here's your time. Here's your time to make some plays. We didn't get them stopped and we didn't make enough plays. Yeah, I'm pissed at the team. Like I tell them, I always put it on me, but I am pissed at my team because when you have those kind of opportunities, you've got to do it and we didn't do it."

Also potentially damaging his credibility: Jackson’s decision to bring in quarterback Carson Palmer and when he called it the greatest trade ever made.

Yahoo Sport’s Michael Silver, though, believes Jackson is safe, writing, "My Raiders sources believe Hue Jackson will NOT be fired, despite rumors...”

Is Hue Jackson in danger of getting fired?

The Carson Palmer situation was a no win one when Run DMc couldn't return. Palmer showed his arm strength is still there. With a full training camp he'll be fine. His receiving corps were injured every game with the best of the bunch rarely playing. I think Jackson will get one more shot next year. After all, he was hand-picked by Al Davis. The defense needs a major overhaul. These guys are over-rated. I don't believe there's as much talent on that side of the football as people suggest. A new defensive co-ordinator will help but they must be held accountable for their penalties. It's time players start to get cut to send a message this will not be tolerated. I hate to see Rod Woodson let go. He did some great work with the limited skillset he had to work with in that secondary. Hopefully, they can sign some good free agents to have an immediate impact since they won't be getting much via the draft for a couple years. But, it's a great hire and good to see the Raiders have finally moved into the 21st century with the signing of a GM. It's about time.

Is Hue Jackson in danger of getting fired?

The offense has improved over the past year, so I feel he should be given another year at least, to try to successfully complete what he started. As far as the press conference goes, he was just being honest, passionate and trying to convey that he cares about RaiderNation football. But why is it that certain coaches...(i.e Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, Leslie Frazier, etc.) are always accused of not showing emotion or being passionate as their fanbase. However, when they do show passion ala, such as Dennis Green in 2006 and as Hue did it becomes a detriment; why? It's a double standard.

Is Hue Jackson in danger of getting fired?

Hue Jackson is very overrated. He is by no means an offensive genius. Far from it. The Raiders should make a bold move to hire David Shaw from Stanford to coach the Raiders. Shaw will hire a competent staff that actually knows what it's doing rather than taking orders from Hue Jackosn. The last time a Bay Area football team gave so much power to a head coach it ended very badly for them. Good thing they found a competent coach who has actually been a competent/successful head coach elsewhere before getting hired. Yes...I'm talking about Jim Harbaugh!

Al's gone so he could get a chance to redeem himself. Raiders were unpredictable all year so losing to the Bolts really wasn't that much of a surprise.Palmer never looked sharp so they definitely overpaid for him. Lots of injuries will kill a coach.

Raiders should fire Hue Jackson so he can come back to the Ravens and replace Cam Cameron as their offensive coordinator.

He is not going anywhere.  Him and McKenzie have the same agent and they have been friends for years and agree on what it is going to take to fix this thing.  Palmer came in off the street lost the best player on the team and 2 of the top receivers on the team for a significant amount of time and we still almost won the division.  Mind you we also lost our owner mid-season and managed to almost get to the playoffs despite these setbacks.  We need an overhaul on defense for sure and that starts with a new DC.  I would like to see Woodson come back and Biekert, but I understand if we bring in a new DC he would want his own people.  By the way, Palmer never quit on this team.  He tried to do too much which caused the extra INT's, but he made throws that very few QB's in this league could even dream of throwing.  give him a full off-season and he is a top 10 QB that will bring us to the playoffs next year.

You can't fire all of the players, so fire the coach. Jackson did his best with a nothing hand, and rightly called out his players for laying down at the end of the season. His one bad move was bringing in Carson Palmer who is today's version of Jeff George, with one more character flaw than George: Palmer is a quitter. Jackson should get more time to do things his was, but it seems like things are lining up against him now.
