The expected and the rumored is now official: Romeo Crennel is the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced on Monday morning.

"We are very excited to name Romeo the new head coach of the Chiefs,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement released by the team. "In 30 years as a coach in the National Football League, Romeo has established an outstanding track record of success, and we believe his experience and proven ability make him the best person to help us reach our goal of consistently competing for championships."

Crennel seemed like a lock to become the Chiefs head coach after a 2-1 stretch to close out 2011 and a strong defensive effort against some high-caliber offenses like the Packers, Patriots and Steelers in the final eight weeks of the season.

"I have a deep appreciation for the vision that Clark Hunt has and his commitment to building a championship-caliber team," Crennel said. “I believe in the types of players that we are trying to win with and the identity we are trying to create. It is a rare opportunity to be a part of an organization like the Kansas City Chiefs with its storied history and passionate fans and I am eager to get to work and bring this franchise and our fans the success they deserve."

Crennel coached for four years with the Browns, posting a 24-40 record in that time. The Chiefs were reportedly set to interview former Jags coach Jack Del Rio, but the list of potential candidates dried up quickly, with Jeff Fisher honing in on Miami and St. Louis, and Josh McDaniels heading back to New England.

That doesn't make Crennel the leftovers by any means; he was always the favorite to get the gig after the way the Chiefs closed out the season. It just simplified the process for Hunt and general manager Scott Pioli.

How many times are people going to make the argument "Well, Bill Belichick didn't do well in Cleveland either"? First of all, that was the pre-Ravens team in Cleveland. Secondly, just because Belichick had success in NE doesn't mean Romeo will have it in KC. Sure, Crennel is a very good DC and a nice guy whom his players like. Fact is that Pioli wanted a "yes" man who would do everything his way. He wanted the most comfortable hire. This is similar to Smith hiring Norv Turner in San Diego...a good coordinator, players coach, safe pick, has a failed head coaching resume in previous job...sound familiar? Nothing against Crennel personally, but I foresee a few more mediocre seasons coming.

Not a good hire. Crennel is a decent coordinator but not a head coach. He has proven this in the past.

Thank you Hunts another horrible. inept, and lazy hire and it WILL cost Pioli HIS JOB next season.  Next Season the Chiefs will once again be somehwere be once again somewhere between a 4-12 or a 6-10 team depending on breaks, injuries etc.  Crennel is nothing more then a puppet for Pioli one of the 5 guys in the league that will and can let Pioli do his question is what are the Chiefs going to do for the 2013 season...the fans will demand and have Pioli fired, Clark Hunt will yet again be looking for a new GM a GM that doesn't know anything about what KC does or doesn't have...and its a double edged sword.  Clark won't hire a GM  or a coach/gm that really knowes their shit because they will demand much more money and control then Hunt wants to give.  We've become the KC Cheaps can we change our team colors to green and gray and our logo to be the $ or the $$$ sign and Arrowhead will now become called the Safe for all the money that Hunt is Saving and not spending.   Here's the key quote that really shows me that KC nor Hunt, Pioli, nor Crennel really have any desire to win a SB.  Here's the quote "our goal of consistently competing for championships.”  consistently competing=just making playoffs and fortunately being in the worst conference in Football thats a possibily but this shows Pioli and Hunt just want to make at least just one playoff game and done so at best KC gets a 17 week football game schedule instead of 16 and Pioli thinks the fans will be stupid enough to keep coming to the stadium...sad thing is he's probably right Bad, Terrible Horrible Wrong hire...and come the start of the 2013 football pre-season KC still won't have a Head Coach nor a GM because no one in their right minds will work for HUNT or HUNT AND Pioli.  CLARK DO US A FAVOR AND YES I'M YELLING AT YOU. YOU KNOW NOTHING STUPID CHEAP A$$ FAWKHEAD  SELL THE TEAM DO YOUR FANS A FAVOR STOP SINGLE HANDEDLY EMBARRASSING KC WE KNOW YOU'RE NOT A NATIVE KCian...GET THE FAWK OUT.   I can't stand him geeeze.

That's somewhat of a tounge in cheek schpiel considering the number he did on the Pack a few weeks ago. But you're right that our offense is bad-need a QB upgrade and coordinator. My guess is that to minimize disruption it will be Zorn, and I've no clue how that will turnout. If Charles is not 100% they're in deep caca. Bowe & Carr are both FA's & they can only franchise one. Hunt may be too tight to pay them both. O line needs big makeover after cutting Waters. Pioli looked like one of two things-either a fool or a Patriots homie that dealt off the bottom of the deck making that move. Doesn't make much diff anyway, as the league is so watered down now, you only have about 3-4 teams that are dominant week in & week out. Donkeys in the playoffs? Worst div in FB, so maybe the squaws aren't that far off in AFC West. Unless Tebow has lightning bolts to throw at NE, his season will be over Sat. Good luck to the Pack in the BG show, I went to school with one of your old QB's L Dickey, & Dad went to same college as McCarthy...about 20 miles from my little farm. McCarthy has huge endowments going to Baker each year of his contract. JMO but so many who get rich in pro sports do absolutely nothing to betters others lives. Jim Brown used to hammer guys like Deion & M Jordan for that. Setting up a "foundation" for tax purposes is one thing, actually getting out in the implementation & operation of a project is entirely different, and Brian Waters was NFL Man of the Year last year. That may have been Haley's call to release him & if it was, may have largely contributed to his downfall. O line was just awful, look at all the injuries to guys in the backfield. Steve Breaston was in AZ with Haley & offered this reflection upon his signing here, "He's (Haley) not an a$$hole ALL the time." At least Romeo is a likable professional man.

The Chiefs will hopefully hire a good DC to replace Crennel and replace Bill Muir as OC. He is too vanilla so succeed in today's NFL. The Chiefs have significantly more talent on their roster than the pitiful Browns had when Crennel coached there, so I am not even remotely concerned about that. Bellichick was 36-44 at Cleveland and he seems to have done a little better after going to a different team.

The most important people on staff in KC right now is the medical and training staff. They need to get all of our injured players healthy and ready to go next year. We don't have enough depth of talent to survive without so many key players.

I am happy that Crennel was given the job. He had the full support of the KC players and not acting on that would have inevitably led to friction in the locker room. this allows the team to avoid that drama and fucos on football. Hopefully they will get the rest of their staff put together quickly so that they can get to work.

The Browns are the worst organization in football. Any coach in NFL history would look terrible there, and Crennel wasn't half bad. See how Pat Shurmur is working out for them now? One year and you can already tell he is a failure. I bet Cleveland fans must be wishing they didn't run Crennel out now.
