Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

By Josh Katzowitz

The fall for Hines Ward this season was precipitous. After all, the four-time Pro Bowler lost his starting job to Antonio Brown in November, and his 46-catch, 381-yard, two-touchdown performance this season was the worst stat line since his rookie season.

But, contrary to what some speculated (his teammates, for instance), the Steelers receiver is not going to step away from the game, announcing on his Facebook page that he’ll return next season.

As’s Mike Freeman reported Monday morning, Steelers teammates believed Ward might retire. But, Freeman wrote, “that doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen. Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year.”

That, Ward wrote, is exactly what he’s going to do:

“I'm also getting lots of questions about retirement so let me set the record straight: I have no plans on retiring right now. I want to win another Superbowl (sic). I don't know where the media is getting this info from but rest assured that when I decide to retire, you'll hear it from ME first.”

Ward, though, probably will have to be content by playing as a backup slot receiver for a Steelers receiving corps that is young and speedy. If, that is, he can make the team at all next year. Which might be a question heading into the 2012 season.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Well, Hines has certainly dropped off in production due to some young receivers but no matter when he does retire, I was fortunate to watch one of the greatest blocking wide receivers to ever play the game. It is not often to see 260 pound linebackers and defensive ends de-cleated and sent air born by one of his signature crack-back blocks. Hines has always left everything on the field...hope he bagged his Dancing With The Stars partner off the field!

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

I will always appreciate Hines Ward - remember how hard he had to work when Kordel Stewart was the quarterback? He took (and gave) lots of hits for the Steelers. I hope he stays w/ a pay cut and goes out with class - coaching the young receivers and making the occasional big catch as a 4th or 5th receiver. If he changes teams for a chance for a few more mediocre years I'll be disappointed. Take the Bettis route!

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

He is too proud to take steep salary reduction and play #5 WR.  I think he'll be a productive #3 WR for another team.  Maybe Atlanta or Arizona.  I hope he does not end up in the AFC and particularly the AFC North.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

I love how much people hate Hines Ward just because their own players hate him for hitting hard.  You have no other reason to hate him.

P.S. Steelers don't have/need cheerleaders.  We go to the games to watch football and don't need side shows because the game is entertaining enough in Pittsburgh.  Strip clubs serve the cheerleader purpose.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Hines is a lock for the NFL Hall of Fame. He's been on a winning Super Bowl team and won Dancing with the Stars. Anyone else that's done that is in the Hall of Fame.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Jimmy smith aint getting into the hall of fame so what makes you think derek mason and hines ward are getting in! Jimmy smith was a much better receiver than both of those guys but he played for the jags and did cocaine but he still has 13k receiving yards in 10 years of playing !
I can't believe you are comparing Jimmy Smith to Hines Ward! He did NOT have 13K receiving yards. He retired with 12,287 yards, which is only 204 yards ahead of Ward. Hines will eclipse Smith with a couple more games. Jimmy Smith also only had 862 career catches, while Hines Ward has 1,000. In fact, Jimmy Smith didn't even have as many catches as Keenan McCardell (883) did! Hines Ward is one of only 8 players in NFL history with 1,000 or more catches. Of the 7 that are ahead of Ward on the list, only one of them is already in the HoF (Jerry Rice). Of the other 6, there are 4 that are not eligible for HoF yet (Tony Gonzalez-still active, Marvin Harrison, Terrell Owens, and Isaac Bruce). The remaining 2 that are above Ward on the all-time receptions list, ARE eligible, but not yet in the HoF, are: Cris Carter and Tim Brown.

Hines Ward and Jerry Rice are the only 2 on this list that have won mulitple Super Bowls and/or have been Super Bowl MVPs. Ward is head and shoulders above Jimmy Smith, and will get in to the HoF.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

You have a ring and realitive good health.  time to get out while you can.  Be a coach if you want to hang around the game but as a back up you will just be holding up a roster spot that you team needs for younger talent.  I respect the way you played and your leadership in the locker room but man up and get out.  Please dont hang on too long!
