Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Ward

By Josh Katzowitz

The fall for Hines Ward this season was precipitous. After all, the four-time Pro Bowler lost his starting job to Antonio Brown in November, and his 46-catch, 381-yard, two-touchdown performance this season was the worst stat line since his rookie season.

But, contrary to what some speculated (his teammates, for instance), the Steelers receiver is not going to step away from the game, announcing on his Facebook page that he’ll return next season.

As CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman reported Monday morning, Steelers teammates believed Ward might retire. But, Freeman wrote, “that doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen. Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year.”

That, Ward wrote, is exactly what he’s going to do:

“I'm also getting lots of questions about retirement so let me set the record straight: I have no plans on retiring right now. I want to win another Superbowl (sic). I don't know where the media is getting this info from but rest assured that when I decide to retire, you'll hear it from ME first.”

Ward, though, probably will have to be content by playing as a backup slot receiver for a Steelers receiving corps that is young and speedy. If, that is, he can make the team at all next year. Which might be a question heading into the 2012 season.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

PittGW
so what about Chris Carter? He didn't have all that Super Bowl MVP blah blah blah stuff. He made it right in. He was a great receiver.

I think Ward falls into the same category as Mason but Mason doesn't have the accolades. Just an opinion sorry to be hatin.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Chop -

Mark my words, he is good and an icon to Steeler fans but questionable for HOF consideration. That happens to alot of WRs not just Smilee. Would you like me to mention some other good/great WRs that have to sit to get a HOF nod?

That's all I said. But I do agree he should call it right now...

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Ward definintly deserves to go into the hall of fame. He's definintly met all the criterea with the exception of truly elite career numbers.
- He's won the championships AND has been a big part of those teams. Including a SB MVP

- He's been a probowler and all pro multiple times.

- And there was a point in his career where he was considered one of the very best at his position.

I'm not so sure about Derrick Mason. He's got some nice stats, but he's lacking in alot of other areas.

-He's never won a championship. Like it or not, this makes a difference in the voting.

-He's never consistently been a probowler or all-pro.

- I can't think of any point during his career that he was considered even a top 5 receiver in the league. He's never been elite at his position.

He does get some credit for his longevity. It's certainly a feat to be able to be as productive as he was for as long.

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

I could see Hines sticking around for another year.  Of course he's not the same player as previous years, however, he's not going to hurt the team, he's going to be a major benefit to the young receivers.  Having him on the team will only have positive results, even if his contributions are more on the sidelines and the locker room than on the field.  Also, i'd be very surprised if he's not a 1st ballot HOFer.

@ravenidiot

You think Mason is 50/50 to get in the hall of fame???  He is only the 20th receiver to get 12,000 yards, and is only 50 or so catches away from being the 10th reciever in history to have 1,000 catches.

Look here:

Every receiver above an below Mason on this list is in, or will be in, the HOF.  I think you are largely mistaken if you don't think Ward or Mason will be in the HOF.  I guess only time will tell, but both are deserving, and both will be in.  Ward has more catches, more yards, 2 SuperBowl victories, 3 appearances, and a SuperBowl MVP, so if you are looking one or the other, Ward would definitely get the nod.  But I think both are shoe-ins!!!

Your jab about Ward getting it just because he is a Steeler like saying Jeter is going to get in just because he is a Yankee.  It makes you sound like the latter part of your screen name...

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

@ Ravenidiot-

You are a true hater my friend. To think that Hines Ward has not
done enough to warrant a trip to Canton is well, a haters opinion! He is one of
only 8 people in the history of the NFL to have 1000 catches, Super Bowl MVP,
Best blocking WR in the game. Teams had to gameplan for him. He was not scared
to catch a ball anyplace anytime. He ran over people for the extra yards. To
think that Ward will not make it in because of people like you is a travesty…..

Hines Ward says he will NOT retire

Hines Ward has a shot of HOF because he is on the Steelers which makes you adored by the higher ups, but he is almost like a Derrick Mason in all respects, Andre Reed (although he did make it in, but had to sit a few years).

Solid performer but its 50/50 if he would get in.
