Troy Polamalu wins appeal on $10K cell phone fine

By Will Brinson

Way back in October, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was fined $10,000 for talking on his cell phone during a game. Polamalu was on the phone with his wife, telling her was OK health-wise, which is why Steelers coach Mike Tomlin believed the safety shouldn't be fined.

The NFL didn't care, and fined Polamalu anyway. But happy news today as Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that Polamalu won his appeal of the fine and was notified of his win by the league on Thursday.

According to league rules, usage of electronic equipment on the sideline (or, in the bench area, if you prefer) is illegal up to 90 minutes before games until the end of game. (It's why players can't tweet during games either.)

Obviously Polamalu's communication with his wife was a matter of alerting her that he was physically safe so the league is providing an exception to the rule here. There's some argument that allowing such an exception could create an easy excuse for players who want to use electronics on the sideline.

A few problems with that logic: there has to be some concern for the health of an individual who wants to use electronics for that excuse to apply. Polamalu was fined anyway, so the player in question would likely need proof that an emergency contact/immediate family member was called/texted/tweeted. And finally, the advantage of using a cell phone on the sidelines is pretty minimal.

All that being said, the league would be smart to bring something like this before the competition committee in the offseason and determine a way that a team with an injured player can provide an alert to family members who aren't at the game and might be concerned with the health of the player in question.

bronson90210 had a very good comment but it was removed. Not that it was an unclean version, but perhaps this will do: top rate NFL news-Tebow used the restroom this morning.

Yeah he went to the bathroom and took a sparkdog which he unceremoniously flushed.

Just have one of the 100 workers on the sideline run into the tunnel and call his lady for him. Stupid rule or not, seems pretty easy to adhere to it.

Is this really all the NFL has to worry about?  Now, are these the questions Polamalu was really called here to answer? Phone calls and foot lockers? Please tell me that you have something more, Commisioner. This NFL player is on trial for their 10,000 big ones. Please tell me their NFL Player Association hasn't pinned their hopes to a phone bill.  You want answers? I want the truth, you can't handled the truth!

sstambaugh-  best movie reference i've seen in a long time.

Roger, we play in a league that has great wide receivers. And those WRs need to be guarded by players with guts. Whose gonna do it? You Mr. Asomunga? You Mr. Cromartie?  You want me on that defense! You NEED me on that defense!  We use words like zone blitz, bump n' run, and man-to-man coverage.  We use those words as the backbone of the best scoring defense in the league year in and year out...

Out of the dozens of hacks lining the sideline, could one of them have notified Mrs. Over-The-Hill on his behalf?  I swear, this generation of player will put themselves above all else without a second thought.  I'm sure the Hoody, before he emphasizes "just do your job..." also reminds these half-wits to "put a cork in it..."  Amazing how guys like Polumalu are revered for their "contributions" to the game (careless launching of his body toward opponents), while behaving as though they could not care less about the NFL ( I have No Future without the League).  At the very, very least, would you not be concerned about the appearance of impropriety?  Hey Troy, did you get an education out there on the Left Coast?

If a player is not on the field and participating in the game who cares if they use a cell phone. Is it illegal to use a cell phone now? Good for them for withdrawing the fine but it should have never been in the first place.

Motown, where are your Lions.  Oh yeah, that's right.  They got crushed in the first round.  At least you were in the playoffs.  How many years had it been since your team was there?  No wonder you hate the Steelers.  They are way too successful for you.  Your team had one of the greatest RBs in NFL history and did nothing with him.  I would be upset at class organizations as well.

I don't understand it. Rules are rules and he broke one of the rules. Fine him. What was he doing with a cell phone on the sideline in the first place if he is not allowed to use it until the game ends?
What if someone on the Steelers' staff provided him with the phone??

Boze, If i remember right he was hit hard in the head and there was a lot of talk about a concussion or other type of head/neck injury so after he was checked out by the teams medical staff he called his wife to let her know there was nothing wrong with him.
