Way back in October, Steelers safety Troy Polamalu was fined $10,000 for talking on his cell phone during a game. Polamalu was on the phone with his wife, telling her was OK health-wise, which is why Steelers coach Mike Tomlin believed the safety shouldn't be fined.

The NFL didn't care, and fined Polamalu anyway. But happy news today as Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that Polamalu won his appeal of the fine and was notified of his win by the league on Thursday.

According to league rules, usage of electronic equipment on the sideline (or, in the bench area, if you prefer) is illegal up to 90 minutes before games until the end of game. (It's why players can't tweet during games either.)

Obviously Polamalu's communication with his wife was a matter of alerting her that he was physically safe so the league is providing an exception to the rule here. There's some argument that allowing such an exception could create an easy excuse for players who want to use electronics on the sideline.

A few problems with that logic: there has to be some concern for the health of an individual who wants to use electronics for that excuse to apply. Polamalu was fined anyway, so the player in question would likely need proof that an emergency contact/immediate family member was called/texted/tweeted. And finally, the advantage of using a cell phone on the sidelines is pretty minimal.

All that being said, the league would be smart to bring something like this before the competition committee in the offseason and determine a way that a team with an injured player can provide an alert to family members who aren't at the game and might be concerned with the health of the player in question.

Troy Polamalu wins appeal on $10K cell phone fine

This really is beyond ridiculous.  Why in the world didn't a Steeler staffer get on the phone and call his wife?  Now this has to go to commitee, get a rule change and all kinds of garbage.  No cell phones on the sideline.  No excuse.  There are way more reasons to not have them than to have them.  Mark my words, this will be abused by someone the first year it is changed.

Is this really all the NFL has to worry about?  Now, are these the questions Polamalu was really called here to answer? Phone calls and foot lockers? Please tell me that you have something more, Commisioner. This NFL player is on trial for their 10,000 big ones. Please tell me their NFL Player Association hasn't pinned their hopes to a phone bill.  You want answers? I want the truth, you can't handled the truth!

Either NFL Investigators are really, really good or Troy has a big outdated cell phone from the late '80s. No way you could just casually see a modern phone under that mop top. You couldn't see an Ipad. He should try a bluetooth headset next time.

Troy Polamalu wins appeal on $10K cell phone fine

My sources @ NFL headquarters say that officials have received the numbers dialed on Mr. Polamalu's cell phone. The first was to his financial consultant, Leon Bloom; the 2nd was to a Dorothy Polamalu; the 3rd was to known Pittsburgh bookie, Anthony Giovanni; the 4th was to a 1-800-IHATE TEBOW and a 5th was to the local Domino's to deliver 36 pepperoni pizzas @ halftime.

If you do not want players to use mobile devices to communicate during the game (understandable), then create a way for a team representative to call the spouses and/or other family members to relay vital health information; or have a number for family members to call that is always answered when there are injury concerns, etc.

As much as I think fining is out of control, I am sure the information could have been given to Polamalu's wife in some other way.

I'm just wondering why the wife wasn't able to watch the game to see that he was ok with her own eyes?

Or simply have someone from the Steeler's staff call from the locker room -- that would not break the rule on players using phones, etc?
