It might sound like an Onion headline, but it's very much real: two men were shot at a Duluth, Georgia Applebee's after cheering for the 49ers during Saturday afternoon's victory over New Orleans.

Donald Ray Ayro was arrested Saturday after allegedly firing a gun at Christopher Middleton and Corey Adams in the parking lot of an Applebee's. Ayro allegedly took offense because Middleton and Adams were rooting for the 49ers, bought his meal from the restaurant and left in a hurry, saying he would return.

"The only thing me and my buddy said was, we were excited that the 49ers scored," Adams said per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It was only one touchdown."

Ayro did return and allegedly confronted the two in the parking lot, where he shot Middleton in the abdomen (he was taken to a hospital in critical condition) and grazed Adams with a bullet.

It's a bizarre -- and hopefully not sad-ending -- story, one that is incredibly terrifying for anyone swinging into a southern restaurant off of I-85 to check out a football game. Unless you've already been to an Applebee's in the South. Then it's not quite as surprising.

It;s terrible that these two men were shot over sports, something that is meant to be for fun and entertainment.  Unfortunately it shows what sports have evolved into.  They're more than just fun and entertainment as can be seen by this and the incident at the Giants-Dodgers game.  I agree that this is terrible and should've never happened, but as a writer for a pretty big sports website, the writer should've never written the stuff about the south.  I live in the south and love sports, but would never even think about hurting someone because of a game.  The media fuels stereotypes.  They do it with everything, black QBs, latina and Asian baseball players, everything and that's what makes it worse.  If you stop mentioning that "player x" is the first latina/black/asian player to do such and such, it would only make things better.  This writer basically implied that if you're not from the south, don't go into an Applebees.  This dumba** that shot them was one person.  It doesn't mean that all of us in the south get pissed off and run to get a gun anytime someone pulls for a team we don't like.

I'm so sick and tired of reading about these so called fans that use sports to justify their means for violence. What is wrong with people that they have to take it to the next level? It's disgusting, and that's not what sports or cheering for your team is about. These individuals are NOT real fans...they are punks looking for a fight and have nothing better to do. I hope this individual rots in a cell in jail. People should be able to root for whoever they want without having to worry about their own safety. Yes there will be heckling...and hazing, but as long as it's all in good fun and no one takes it to the next level....that's what it's all about.

It's good news that no one was more seriously hurt, but it's very sad that some people aren't capable of watching a friendly game from being played without resorting to schoolyard violence.  Every team has fans that take maniacal rooting too far, and no one wants to be as well-behaved and boring as Japanese baseball fans.  But in the wake of terrible violence against MLB baseball fans this past season, people need to learn that nothing such as a game is important enough to lose lives over.

Reminds me of two other guys murdered in Georgia after a football game. Seems like it was after the Super Bowl. Also believe an NFL linebacker participated in the murders, and is currently playing in the NFL. Even though he had the victims blood on his shirt, he didn't know much about what happened. There's a strange realtionship about murder, Georgia, and football. Seems like there was another NFL quarterback in Georgia who murdered dogs. Finally, the Georgia Bulldogs were murdered in their latest bowl game.

You mean it didn't happen at a Waffle House or a Stuckey's? Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for the two victims. It looks like ol' Donnie Ray Reckneck will be getting a one-way ticket to the Georgia state pen.

What a classless move by this author by insulting southerners.  You really should be ashamed of yourself, but I doubt you are as you obviously hold yourself out to be better than others.

A shot at the South is WAY out of bounds whether it's aimed at black or white southerners, urban or rural.  If he had a point he lost it with his own biases.

No Kidding....WTF?

Good point tweener

I won't ever go to a Raiders game not only because I'd bemurdered in the parking lot, but also because they eat small children and fat women that can't run away fast enough. My friends who were Bear fans and traveled to Chicaca to attend a game were assaulted at the airport when they arrived, for not knowing the "packer haters" version of the lambeau song sung at green bay games, by the ticket agents hanging around on their break near the incoming gate. And Philly? Their violent past is repeatedly noted about how they "booed santa". What nobody knows, and the networks never aired, was that 3 of his elves were disemboweled in the home team end zone, and tailgaters shot, field-dressed, and BBQ'd the entire herd of original reigndeer that Santa had raised from little baby fawns. (Today, when he delivers gifts to the only 4 "good" kids in that vile town, he leaves the new deer in a safe place and drives a humvee with a .50 cal mounted on the roof. ...... just sayin....
