Report: Rams offer Brian Schottenheimer OC job

Brian Schottenheimer's unceremonious departure from the Jets cooled most of the chatter about him landing a head-coaching gig, but several teams showed interest in bringing him on as their offensive coordinator. And now the Rams have reportedly offered him the position.

Schottenheimer was mentioned as a candidate for the Falcons offensive coordinator position, but Dirk Koetter landed that gig on Sunday. On Saturday, a report emerged that the Rams were interested in Schottey, and on Sunday evening, NFL.com's Mike Lombardi reported that St. Louis offered him the position.

Latest Coaching Rumors, News

Lombardi writes that Schottenheimer is prepared to accept the job and "all that's left to make it official is for the contract to be completed." It's not surprising that Schottenheimer, who's stock dipped at the same pace as the Jets offensive production in 2011, would take the job.

But it's unlikely that Rams fans will be too thrilled: the Jets never finished better than 17th in passing offense and only once finished in the top 10 in total offense for a season under Schottenheimer.

The failures of Mark Sanchez to progress as a passer isn't exactly hopeful news for Rams fans either; Sam Bradford took a big step back in 2011 after a really promising rookie season. While injuries, failures on the offensive line and a lack of weapons didn't help, there's reason to be concerned.

Fisher's decision on the other side of the ball may come under some heat as well: it's believed that he'll bring -- or try to bring -- Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to St. Louis. Williams coached under Fisher in Tennessee before taking the head coaching job in Buffalo in 2001.

The Saints defense is aggressive (their No. 2 ranking in takeaways in 2009 is precisely why they won the Super Bowl), but that's not always a good thing; just look to the final five minutes of their playoff loss to the 49ers and the inability of Williams' calls to avoid giving Alex Smith single-coverage looks to Vernon Davis.

Both Schottenheimer and Williams have had success before, so it's not like this can't work. But like Williams defense, the result for both guys could be boom or bust.

Report: Rams offer Brian Schottenheimer OC job

Mai - Get your facts straight.  The Jets Offensive line is weak, really?  How many other teams have two all-pro offensive lineman?  Not many.  They had 1 weak spot on the O-line, that does not make the entire line weak.  You proved the point about Schotty with your statemeents about Sanchez.  He is not a capable QB yet Schotty called 59 pass plays against your Giants.  Whose fault was that?  There are certain plays that are more susceptible to a pick 6, guess what, don't call those plays.  Schotty did.  Everyone knew this team should have run the ball more but Schotty.  No one is arguing the talent level at QB, it is the offcensive coordinators job to hide that weakness and he couldn't do it.  Just wait, next year in St Louis, you will see an overhyped QB and aging RB with a thin WR core and St Louis is going to suck in the weak NFC West for more years to come.

Care to make a wager on that 3-13 prediction for the Jets next year or that Tubby load being ousted?

Lets look at the list of QBs that weren't "good enough" to succeed under Schotty's brilliant leadership... Drew Brees, Chad Pennington, Brett Favre and Mark Sanchez. Hmm, if those 4 guys with very different styles all failed under this clown, maybe just maybe it Schotty and his garbage system??? Get ready STL fans, enjoy watching incomplete dump passes on 3rd and 1 all season long!

Did Fisher see what the Jets offense was like?  At this rate he'll keep the Rams irrelevant for years to come.

as long as Brian Schottenheimer leaves Mark Sanchez with the Jets, I thnk he will be fine.
Agree!!! Schottenheimer was blamed for a poor performing jet offense, however look what he had to work with. A shaky QB that featured a pick 6 a week on short passes, a mediocre running back, a weak offensive line, 2 overrated wide receivers, and no tight end. Do you think that Schotty trusted Sadchize to throw the ball 20-30 yds downfield when he could not even throw it 10 yards with accuracy??? The Jets were over hyped by their portly coach with the big mouth. When Schotty is a succesful OC for the Rams, the real Jet issue will be evident, and that would be Tubby the clueless coach, who is no different than Kotite + 50 Lbs. Expect the Jets to come in at 3-13 next year with Sparano at OC, and that loud thud will be Tubby the load being thrown out of the jet circus tent!!!!

maybe Schotty is getting a raw deal from Jets fans but still I don't think their woes can be blamed entirely on Sanchez and I know what I am about to say will sound like sour grapes but it isn't..I was not impressed with Schottenheimer and if this is Fisher's first big move, as a Phinfan I am a little more ok with Fish passing on Miami than I was yesterday.

Serphnx you have no clue what your talking about, if you acually watched jets games you know the idiotic plays he calls. Isos up the middle on 3rd in 9, right after 2 run plays have failed. Gimmick plays that always resulted in zero or a loss in yards.  If it was 3rd and 5, hed call 3 yard slants. He wont bring the team anything believe me. Im not defending sanchez, he was horrible. But I believe the ravens won a superbowl with trent dilfer under helm while acually being able to put up points, so please sir go bet your house on it, Id rather you out on the streets so I dont have to see you spurt nonsense on forums anymore

Nice move by the Rams. Expect a whole different team next season with him, Fisher, Bradford and Steven Jackson.
